Is getting the hard drive a must to get for the mpc 1000 or could you do without it?

You could absoluteley do without it and just use CF cards.
However , in the long run you may eventualy like to back important work up twice for safety, once on CF and once on a hard drive.

I think you can use up to a 2GB card in the MPC1000 (And some claim more).
It'll take you a while to fill one of those, and when it's full, buy another. They're really cheap now.

Drum hits are generally tiny files.
Large loops may hog your card though.

Yes you can save to the internal memory but, at 5 or so MB, it won't hold much.

I rock an 8GB w/ no problems except for a slower save time. There's no reason why 16GB wouldn't work but the one thing to make sure of is speed performance. Some of these newer joints like the Kingston Elite Pro's are specifically faster.

Also I don't even use a HD. I make regular backup's onto the computer for safe-keeping and have my CF card organized by drums, samples, projects, etc. Once I start to get to the point where I'm running out of space I simply make some by backing up & deleting projects that are already done or that I'm not working on at the moment.

Where you get the pad upgrade from?

I purchased a 160GB HDD. When I had my 2500 I got up to 7GB in about a month but I was sampling ALOT at the time and getting everything organized.
