Problem with my new 160 gig hard drive

I recently Installed a new Hitachi Travelstar Hard Drive 160GB hard drive and i format it and it says 32684mb free space is that about right?
And another problem i get is that when i save anything to the hard drive it disappears! to make it even worse when i usb my hard drive to my laptop it recognizes it but then when i click on it it save that its not formatted so i reformat it on my mpc and again same problem someone help!

Did you format the HD (FAT32) in a computer before you installed it in the MPC?

nope it doesn't i get a "unable to format this drive" error message
so i sent it back and i'm getting a replacement i hope its not a problem with my mpc
