Mulitple Track recording on the MPC1000? Like the XL

My 2000XL is getting a little old now, so I'm thinking of getting a 1000. Smaller and lighter for Live use, plus I dont have the fx board for the XL.

I have one question, Does the MPC1000 support multiple track recording (MIDI) like the XL? I had a look in the manual and thus.... it doesnt look like it =(

I need this for live use you see. I'll explain:

I have midi out set to OMNI so that midi is echo'd to my sound module (NOVA) from another sequencer (machinedrum) which goes into midi input 2 on the MPC. I have a controller keyboard going into midi input 1.

The machine drum is transmitting on midi channels 4,5,6 which goes into the MPC and is output from the MPC to the NOVA (because OMNI is on). Great!

Now in the multi track mode edit screen of the XL I can switch off channels 4, 5, 6 so they are not recorded. This is because I do live sequencing And I dont want the MPC to record stuff on channels 4,5,6 as this is allready sequenced from the machinedrum.

This way I just set my controller keyboard to either midi channel 1, 2, or 3 for previewing the sounds from the sound module, and to do live recording, whilst playing midi channels 4, 5, 6 from the controller keyboard will not be recorded but will still allow me to preview sounds from the module as the OMNI mode will pass them through.

I only have one midi input on the NOVA and it needs to be sequenced by 2 machines.. the MPC (channels 1 - 3) and machinedrum (channels 4 - 6). This was the only way I could think of doing this without one of those dreadful midi merge boxes (everything is midi sync'd here so I need everything as tight as possible).

So..... is this sort of thing possible with the MPC1000 (with/without multiple track recording)?

You have 99 midi tracks that will record and play back all 16 channels. The short answer is YES

1000 cannot record more than one midi track at once. 2000XL can record on 4tracks simultaneously. comfy, you should ask in 2500 forum , maybe it has this feature, I don't know.

Thought so, (after reading the 1000 manual a fair few times now) I think its the same for the 2500 too, so no joy there either. AFAIK the 2000XL can record all 32 (16 + 16) midi tracks at once! although I've only ever used 3.

One question about the 1000 though... which would help me (Its not too clear in the manual).

If you set the midi channel of the "Active track recieve channel" to say channel 1. And "Soft thru" to OMNI. Are other midi channels recived at the midi input, sent to the midi outs?

This would solve my issue. The 2000XL doesnt do this though. Setting the recieve channel to 1, and thru to OMNI means that only channel 1 is ever output, all other channels seem to be discarded.

Each individual midi track will record and play back all events from all 16 channels. You're not actually using multiple midi tracks, you're using multiple channels, so I think it WILL work.

I think thats part of my problem... I've got multiple midi channels coming into the MPC, but I only want to record channel 1 events to a track, whilst having the other channels redirected to the midi output.

I'm hoping that setting "Active track recieve channel" to channel 1, and "soft thru" to OMNI on the 1000 could achieve this.

AFAIK the 2000XL cannot do this (which is why I had to use the Multi Track feature), but on the 2000 it does refer to "Recieved Channel" and not "Active track recieve channel". Which makes me think this might work on the 1000.

I'd be very greatful if someone could confirm if this works or not.

1000 can send/receive on 32channels, means play and playback, but you cannot assign more than one channel to a track.. there is no such screen, where you can route few channels to one track. That's why you will not record MIDI notes on few channels at the same time. Simple. If there is such way, enlight me please.

comfy, as far as I remember OMNI mode will pass all channels on soft thru, but won't give my head on that and I can't check right now.

I am trying to tell you guys that each track records 16 channels all at the same time! If you're only sending data on 3 channels, it will record everything you send on those three channels on a single track so there is no reason it wouldn't work!!!!!! I use my akai s2000 sampler in multimode and I can record midi events on seperate channels (using overdub) and send them out to trigger the different programs on my s2000 (each prog uses a seperate channel)
