True for the 2500, but there's a trick to direct record, gotta dig it up, its in the 500 forum but one dude did it. It a bit work, the 500 can do it too but its more easier to do than the trick for the 1000. I'll be back.

it's possible
i did it by:
1. connecting a mixer to the mpcs record ins via two quarter inch cables
2. plugging guitar/bass into the mixer input 1
3. then using an audio track and hitting record

ive had a 2k for a while now so i how to work these machines for the most part. i got my 1000 this week and was wonderingif this function was available on it so i came here for a quik answer, cause im to lazy to rtfm right now.
i messed around with the audio tracks a little and its not the same as direct record from what ive read on here.
ill green are you talking about audio tracks or are you talking about somethin else, cause im willing to put in some effort to get this to work even of its tricky

Basically the trick is recording in samples while a sequence is playing and a mixer is not necessary. With the 500 you go to Record mode and just hit play to start playing the sequence and hit Do It to sample from your turntable or whatever. This same trick can be done on the 1000 but the method is different. Still digging it up, hold up.

This is where its mentioned that the 1000 can do this. Its not even in the manual, but when you're in Record Mode, hit Play and the sequence will play. And thru its inputs you can sample whatever but it won't sample over the sequence its just sampling a sample as usual and you can chop and trim how you please. This is good if you want to synch your guitar with the beat or adjusting the pitch of some vinyl on a turntable to sample at correct timing or even playing your synth along.
It works on the 500 and it should work on the 1000, though I don't have one to confirm, but if it does work try this trick for looping samples: Hold down the shift key and press the pad you want to loop, the pad will sound off and loop without holding down the pad.
