MPC 1000 MIDI questions

ok I'm a newbee to MIDI and trying to learn the basics so hopefully someone can help. I'm working with a Nord Lead 2x if that has any relevance.
Can you have a song with BOTH MIDI sequence events and recorded samples. Since all the pads represent keyboard notes in MIDI mode, how can you trigger just the sample without sounding the keyboard and vise versa? Also, what is the setting under the track to toggle between DRUM and MIDI do? Everything seems to work the same regardless of my choice. thanks

RTFM then remember MPC is multitrack sequencer. So on main page set drum to midi and set midi channle - A for midi out 1-16A, B for midi 1-16 B.

Maybe I need to make my question more specific. I understand how to set up different tracks with different MIDI channels.
Lets say for example I have seq 1 track 1 midi channel 1a to a play a synth sound/riff. When set up this way, all of the MPC pads now also corrospond to a keyboard note so I can play notes by hitting the keyboard or the pads. Lets say I have a recorded sample on PAd 1 and PAd 1 also corrosponds to a midi note in my sequence. When the sequencer is playing it will trigger and play the recorded sample on that pad along with the synth note.
Lets say I created track 2 to play the sample. Even If I have track 2 muted, the MPC will still trigger the sample sound every time my track 1 plays the PAD 1 note. And, vise versa, if I have track 1 muted and play track 2, the synth note on Pad one will also play every time the sample plays
How do I get around this? I'm sure its a setting that im just not understanding.
I've read the manual throurougly and I apologize that I havn't figured it out but this is what the forums are for, yes?

On the midi tracks you must turn program to off.I do not know about the Nord (although I would hope
it is multitimbral )you must turn off local on the keyboard.Hope this helps TYPO

bliprock's answer is right

for the track which is sending midi to the synth, set the Pgm to OFF or No, that will stop it playing the MPC samples on that track

then have another track which doesn't send on the synth's midi channel, but has a Program assigned with the sample you want, then that track will play your samples
