MPD & MPC1000 - Playing Pad's and Using the Track Mute

Hey there,

I'm wondering if it's possible on the 1000 to hook up a controller like the MPD24 and bang the MPD's pads to jam while the MPC is actually on the TRACK mute mode

It's for a live setup where i wanna be able to still play the sounds whenever i want and still be able to track mute.

I don't have a MPD, but as I have a MPC 2500 and a MPC1000 on my desk at the moment, I figured I might as well try hooking them up. So, I set the 1000 up as the pad controller, the 2500 as the sequencer & sound source. What I found:

Basically, your idea seems to work. So, it is possible to play sequences and mute tracks on the 2500 while simultaneously playing sounds on the 2500 by hitting pads on the 1000.

But this is odd: if you mute track 1 on the 2500, the 2500 stops reacting and won't play the sounds triggered by the 1000.
- the sequence still plays ok
- the 1000 still sends midi data, the 2500 receives it (MONITOR shows incoming note on/off messages). Interesting.

...NOW, WAIT! I had Multi timbre:ON on the 2500 (JJ OS-XL). The 1000 was sending on midi channel 1. When I switched the channel to 2... yes, correct, by muting track 2 on the 2500 it stops reacting. Turn Multi timbre:OFF, guess what.

So knowing that multi-timbral is OFF on the 2500, that means there is something NOT enabled anymore.

So what's this multi timbral "ON" enabling? Not sure it's a great idea to have that off

Also, it's weird that the 2500 would stop playing it's sound when just one track is muted...weird.
Doesnt really make sense. A sequence plays multiple tracks.

"Multi timbre:ON/OFF" was just recently added to JJ OS-XL/OS2XL.

When it's off, the MPC can play & record incoming midi data on one (active) track only. When it's on, it is possible to play & record on up to 16 tracks simultaneously - tracks 1-16 respond to midi channels 1-16 respectively. So, you might have a drum program assigned to track/channel 1 and a bass program assigned to track/channel 2. And you could play the sounds with a pad controller on channel 1 and a keyboard controller on channel 2, for example.

Did some more thinking: it should still be possibe to have Multi timbre:ON. When using midi channels 1 and 2, just leave tracks 1 and 2 empty. No sequence data, nothing. Only give the tracks names like" Don't mute" so in the Track mute screen you'll know instantly what not to do.
... well ... I hope ... I did not test this theory ... yet ...

Ah, no, it does not stop playing. The sequence plays and sounds as it should, with mutes.
But: if you mute the track, you'll also mute the same numbered midi channel, or so it seems!
