MPC Repair Technicians

Are there any MPC repair technicians on this site that can assist with tips on troubleshooting MPC related issues, like knowing what parts to order to resolve issues relating to a MPC not functioning???

I purchase a MPC from eBay and when i plug it in an power it on the LCD lights up and remains blank, the buttons don't function or light up. I tried adjusting the contrast using shift + data wheel, stop + datawheel and any other combination you can name. I also tried holding erase and powering the unit up to see if i can reset to factory default and nothing. The card reader pins appear ok and there is no loose ram or cables. Could a bad LCD stop it from going through the boot sequence or could it be related to something else?

it is unlikely that it's the LCD screen preventing the rest from booting up. i've booted up with the LCD screen completely disconnected w/out problems.

i have not seen this issue before. be prepared to do a lot of troubleshooting. what we need to do is determine which part of the mpc is causing the problem. best case scenario, it's either the L/R op boards or the pad PCB. worst case scenario, the CPU is damaged somehow and is not allowing the MPC to boot properly.

if someone else wants to chime in regarding factory reset, etc please do, as i haven't done that but once or so

first, remove your mpc case (front)
disconnect your pad assembly from your R op board (the board w/ the data wheel) by looking in the bottom left corner of the R op board. do you see the blue ribbon? pull that out by disengaging the clip holding it in the terminal (just be gentle and persistent, you'll figure it out).

then boot up. do the R op buttons light up? mode, padbank, etc?
if not, turn off and look up at the R op board connector on the upper right side of the R op board...it's a white connector, pull that one out. (go ahead and leave the pads disconnected as we go). boot up again, see what happens.

if no luck, turn off again...turn your MPC over and undo the screws to open up the back case.
trace the cable that leads to the LCD screen and unplug that from the MPC main board. be sure you discharge any static by touching the metal case.

repeat bootup...R op board lights? anything?

if that doesn't work, plug the LCD screen back in and then disengage the ribbon connector attaching the CF card reader to the mpc mainboard.......boot up....anything?

so that's a lot of steps to try to isolate the problem. if nothing works, it's possible that your CPU is damaged somehow.

also, make sure that your case is not pushing down any of the bottom right buttons....play, stop, etc. you can test this by pushing them - if they don't click, the case is pushing them down.

but it does appear that one of the parts on the LCD circuit board is burn out

if this is the case, you're in luck because LCD board is an easy replacement.
