Broken buttons

my buttons are dying:

my track mute, mode, and various other function buttons have started to die on me. I have looked up tring to find replacement buttons and am not having much joy, can anyone recommend a supplier of the buttons at a reasonable price ?

p.s why are the newer line line of MPC's seemingly so badly made ? the durability is not good

Really good switches only cost a tiny bit more that bad ones. If Akai increased the MPC price by this pathetically small amount of money & used proper switches instead then the world would be a much nicer place.

For MPC users at least.

but are these "tact switches" the same as the buttons i am talking about on the MPC1000? i thought the buttons i needed to replace didnt need soldering ?

"Tact switches" are the actual small switches under the plastic buttons.
They look like this:

"Buttons", on the other hand, are the plastic parts, like this:

The buttons are quite fragile, they may fail. Same goes with the original switches.

If you click on the button an it makes a click sound and nothing happens it's not your buttons. The buttons are plastic and go on top of the tact, if they break they break but if you push the button and it still makes the click sound then the button itself is still doing what it's supposed to... if you dont know if it's broke for sure remove the top case and you will see all of your buttons on the pcb.

I suggest you just replace the whole PCB instead of soldering switches for days

how much is a PCB board ? and how easy are they to replace ?

extremely easy. don't buy a new pcb. are you gonna buy a new PCb every time a button goes bad? learn how to solder and pick up a skill that will save you hundreds, even thousands of dollars in your life.

just ordered 50 tact swtiches for $10 + shipping

just gotta locate a soldering iron now

koncept, you live right near Jameco. get some desoldering braid and try to get an iron that has an adjustable temperature. i've spent enough money replacing crappy irons that it finally made sense to get one for $40 or so. i don't remember the exact model but it has been so worth it.

EDIT: or you can borrow mine for a week or so if you're gonna be in the city at all. i'll need it back soon but i don't mind lending it to you

Right on Nym!!! I'll kick you down some tact switches once they get here, sometime next week. I'd borrow it friday or something work it on over weekend and get back to you early following week...I'll hit you up with my # in the PM cuz number you previously gave me was your sis or gf's I think...not familiar with Jameco but there is home depot and radio shack nearby. Im in the city everyday between 5am and 130pm on the block of beale/mission and market...quality iron is on my next purchase list for sure
