Confused with MIDI... using MIDI and Micro X

Just in case anybody wants to know... I re-read the manual cover to cover and figured it out. It's a pretty simple fix, but I think the manual could have been a little more clear about this. Aaanyways. The simple answer is, in order to hear the midi events (using the Korg's internal sounds) that you want to add directly to a track in the MPC's main page, the SOFT THRU on the MPC has to be set accordingly. By default, the SOFT THRU is set to off... and when it is off, you can't hear the Korg's sounds.... so you gotta fix this!

Problem solved.... FINALLY. I can now record the Korg sounds straight to a new track in an existing sequence!! Thanks for all the help.


I found this info on page 46 of the manual. It wasn't well explained... but it gave me enough to go on and experiment with different SOFT THRU settings. I copied and pasted the section below.




01. Select the MIDI/SYNC mode by pressing the [MODE] key and hitting the [PAD 9]
(MIDI/SYNC).

02. Press the [F1] (MIDI) key.
The MIDI page will be displayed.

03. Select the Soft thru field and select OFF.
The soft thru field determines how to output the incoming MIDI signal.

You can select the following options:

OFF The MPC1000 will not output the incoming MIDI signal.

AS TRACK The MPC1000 refers to the MIDI channel setting of the sequence’s track. The channel information of the incoming MIDI signal will be replaced with the MIDI channel set in the track.

OMNI- A The MPC1000 will output the incoming MIDI data as it is from MIDI OUT A.

OMNI- B The MPC1000 will output the incoming MIDI data as it is from MIDI OUT B.

OMNI- AB The MPC1000 will output the incoming MIDI data as it is from both MIDI OUT A and B.

Okay well I have to apologize for my last post on this thread. I was in class and was tring to remember what I did from memory... Didn't have the MPC in front of me.

Basically I was trying to record midi from the Korg over a pre-existing drum track in the MPC on a seperate MPC track. Also, I needed to know how to hear the sounds from the KORG being sequenced by the MPC, while simultaneously hearing the pre-existing MPC drum track WITHOUT the use of a mixer.

Here is the REAL solution to the problem if anybody is having the same problems.

Forget what I said about turning the soft thru to off. Put Soft Thru to: AS TRACK.
Sorry again, I was doing it from memory...

In order to hear both devices (MPC and KORG) at the same time through the MPC headphone jack or stereo outs, you gotta turn INPUT THRU to ON. To do this Hit MODE and then PAD8 to bring you to MIXER MODE. Hit the F5 button to bring you to the INPUT tab. At the top left corner of the screen turn INPUT THRU: to ON.

Am I the only one who had this problem?!?! Anyways, just glad I finally figured it out and hopefully this thread helps a few people out.

Detailed Cable Connections and MPC Settings below...

CABLE CONNECTIONS:

1. MPC midi out A to Korg midi in.

2. MPC midi in 1 to Korg midi out.

3. Korg main outputs (left and right for stereo) to MPC RECORD IN (left and right).

4. Plug in some headphones so you can hear everything.


MPC SETTINGS:

5. Select an unused track on the MPC.

6. Choose MIDI instead of DRUM where it says TYPE.

7. Turn PGM to OFF.

8. Hit the MODE button, then hit PAD9. This brings you to MIDI/SYNC mode. In MIDI/SYNC mode, hit F1 to bring you to the MIDI tab.

Select ALL where it says Active track receive channel:
Where it says Soft Thru: select AS TRACK.

9. While still in Midi/Sync Mode, hit F2 to bring you to the SYNC tab. Since you're using the MPC as the master and the Korg as the slave, you can turn SYNC IN: to OFF. Where it says SYNC OUT set it to A. This is so your Korg can send the MPC Midi Clock out of the MIDI A OUTPUT... which is the midi output on the MPC that I told you to use. The Korg will use the MPC's clock to keep in synch with the MPC.

10. Now hit MAIN to bring you back to the main screen of the MPC. Hit MODE and then PAD8 to bring you to MIXER MODE. Hit the F5 button to bring you to the INPUT tab. At the top left corner of the screen turn INPUT THRU: to ON. This is so you can hear the Korg through the MPC's outputs or headphone jack.


Make the appropriate settings on your synth and everything should work. If you don't know the appropriate settings check out my other post... It's similar to this one... just a little more detail. viewtopic.php?f=15&t=114903

In hindsight, yeah... pretty much. I guess that sometimes impatience gets the best of all of us... with you being the exception, apparently.

Oh, and to be perfectly honest... to say that I had a really bad adderall habit back when I started this thread, would be an understatement. When you take that into consideration, it sort of helps to explain the ridiculously overly-detailed step-by-step instructions I took the time to write for a fairly basic task. I'm looking at it now like "WTF!?!?"

In my defense, however, I do think the manual completely glossed over a lot of details and did a shitty ass job of explaining this particular task.
