Hey, I recently got a used blue MPC 1000. Don't know if anybody has covered this (been checkin out mad threads) but Im having a problem recording my drum pattern over a recorded melody from a audio sample. After I record my melody, i select a new track to add kicks, snares, etc. but when I use over dub to record over the melody the melody sounds distorted and does not playback correctly as i record drums in over dub. It does not play back correctly when I play the whole thing either. Whats going on? I GREATLY APPRECIATE THE HELP.

Is your track timing on/off our what signature is it on? I'm going to guess it's off, in which case the problem would be you and your human timing.

AW MAN THANKS FOR REPLYING FIRST OFF! Okay first, I used to keep my timing on 1/8, but when I recorded my drums, it wouldnt playback the way I recorded them. So, I took timing off and now it records the way I play them. And my Tsig is 4/4. Didn't change that. What could be the problem?

Also yes it is off, I tried to time it myself because setting it to a value at 1/8 in time correction wouldn't do. I guess I have to fiddle with the other values. If I set it to another value in Time Correction, do you think I can properly record and playback my drums the way I recorded/played them in OverDub?

Why is it distorted? Is the the audio sample properly looped and bpm correct? You are playing to the click right?MPC does wonders still takes allot of setting.PEACE TYPO

Thanks for your Input. I chopped up a 15 sec. sample and use four samples of that sample to record my melody. I believed I looped it correctly according to the bars, and my tempo is 99 even. Not sure where I locate the Bpm...I'm still screwing around with the Poly and Mono settings until I figure it out or sometime helps me out.
Sn: all i want is my drum pattern to play clearly and correctly over my melody like this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56rivYT6VNc . Hope the link helps answer the question :D

Start off with 4/4 time signature with 1/16.

That should set you up on a good default path to making beats.

Then experiment with 4/4 time signature with 1/16(3) for some swing or you can set the swing manually, either way.

1/8 is NOT the way to go when you are feeling like getting complex with some drums.

Some old schoolers will say turn timing completely off and go freehand but I think it's not the best advice for some people who are still trying to find their own rythm and have horrible timing while getting started. Learn to crawl with 1/16 first.

Okay I think you all can better help me by checking out these findings: When i set the two melody samples to Mono, and set the Program to MONO, the melody records correctly, but overdubbing a kick pattern does sound right or playback right. But if I set the Program to POLY, the kick pattern records correctly and sounds correctly, but some of the melody samples lose their original playback quality (whether I change them to Poly or Mono) (they play till the end regardless of how long you hold the pad and note on or one shot doesn't change a thing) and during playback sound irregular. Maybe it is just with this particular sample, but I think there is a relationship between the Poly and Mono settings for Program itself. I'll try it with another song. Thanks for patience and feedback =)

Have a separate program for your drums and your melody. Play melody on one track and your drums on another.

Okay, I'm assuming when you said have a seperate program means literally two different programs, and play my melody on track one on the first program, and drums on the first track for the second. I'll try it. Meanwhile, I also read the manual. I know sequences can be arranged for a song, but can PROGRAMS be arranged to make a song?

Go back and read pages 6 and 7 in the manual to understand the terms and how they relate to each other.

A program contains the associations between pads and samples, it doesn't contain anything that can be arranged.

Well, the drum pattern is still not recording clearly over the melody...i'll post of video of whats its doing so ppl can better understand.

Programs are pad assignments and param settings, no direct relation to sequencing at all.

You say the melody sounds distorted, is it like clipping distortion?
What's your global level at? If it's at 0db, and all your samples are at full level, then they'll clip. Either set the master level to -12db, or lower all your samples' levels.
