no matter what I do my memory card still reads half full when I pull up the window in the record mode. It says 16MB Installed and only 27 seconds of space to record left. It's totally empty but I can't sample anything longer than 27 seconds. I'm totally confused. Please help.

Memory card is for storing data permanently (after you've done with your session).
RAM is your "session memory" (sampling, programs, sequences).

in other words, you are confusing RAM with CF card. Time to get RAM installed OP
