Black MPC 1000 pads = pad fix upgrade kit?

Hi guys.

Sorry if this has been asked a hundred times before. I tried to search old posts, but couldn't find an exact answer:

Are the upgraded pads on the new black MPC 1000 as good as if you install the pad fix upgrade kit in an older MPC?

I looking for a used MPC 1K, and have been offered the blue one for $ 440. However, if I have to upgrade the pads, maybe it would be smarter to buy one of the black MPC's...

Do yourself a favor and make sure that your purchase includes the pad upgrade. Trust me you do not want to deal with the frustration of dying pads and end up having to shell out the dough for the upgrade.

iirc 99% of the black mpcs have proper MPC FSRs and a single pad array. this is the same thing as the kit you can order to clean up akai's blue and red hurricane katrina.

to test to see if the MPC has real pads without taking the unit apart, grab the bottom left corner of the bottom left pad and with your thumb pull it upward. if you can get the lip out of the frame, you have the new pads. also, if you jiggle a pad and the others move slightly, you have the new pads. if you can't do either of the above, you have the "shame" style pad array and need to replace it.

Unfortunately Akai has people fooled about the black 1k's.
Black doesn't mean anything in regard to pad status.
If you notice there are also different black 1k's they are B, BK-N and BK.
The most current model is the BK and has the new pads.

The black 1k I got a couple of years ago was a BK-N and had the old style pads.
It was the black unit with the silver rear panel.

The one I have now is a BK and it's all black but has the new style pads.

Search the forum there was an old thread that told what the serial number cut in was thought to be for the new style pads.
That seems to be the best move for knowing because the BK-N that I had serial number helped to confirm it some accuracy in it.

I have seen too many black 1k's with the old style pads to be comfortable buying one without physically tugging the pad unless the seller told me it had the new pads before I asked.

simply ask the seller to wiggle a pad corner, when the other pads around are moving
