someone on this board recently posted a compatible rotary encoder replacement part [in the case that yours actually is broken], but it was a bit taller than the MPC1000's, so it would require minimal modification to make it the right size... do a search and you'll find it.

http://www.mpc-forums.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=155186yes, thanks crossings i know that thread. his data wheel is now on top of the faceplate. really nice mod. however, reading that thread discourages me even more since his update says it wont work for old 1000s, which is have. ive raped and pillaged this site on rotary encoders. went to some thread as far back as 2005? no dissing the moderators or creators of this forum, but the search isnt all that up-to-par on here, i still search frequently. i ordered and recieved the rotary encoder part from VST. its the same size as the broken encoder in my akai, not taller, which if ive read right is the ALPS encoder.
dilemma - looking for a place to do the fix. have soldered many things in the past, taking my akai apart and having the right pcb board in front of me im not too confidnet in doing this job. meh. anyway just wanted to see more info (and pix) on the DIY adhesive fix.
