MPC 1000 + Akai S2000

Hello,

I have a MPC1000 128 RAM, I make 80/90's HipHop.
If I take a drumbreak I usually put it trough a bitcrusher on my computer to get the 16 bit grimey sound.

But I thought, since I have the money why not buy an Akai S sampler. In my town there is a used product store and they sell an Akai S2000 for 80 Euro (100$).

My question is, if I buy the sampler do I need any floppy disk for the S2000?

Lets say I have a sample on a record, Outputs on Turntable go to inputs of the S2000. Then resample on S2000, then put the outputs of the S2000 on the inputs of the MPC. I don't store anything on the S2000 so I don't need floppy's right?

And is it better to send the sound from the S2000 from Output (S2000) ---> Input (MPC1000) or through MIDI?

Why do you need the S2000? What's the '16 bit' grimey sound? CDs are 16 bit, there's nothing special nor grimey about 16 bit. MPC1000s are 16 bit. There's nothing particularly grimey about the S2000 A/D convertors either.

I think you may instead be looking for the classic '12 bit' sound? In that case, grab yourself an S950 or if you have proper cash, an EMU SP12/SP1200. And yes, you could sample into that and just resample it into your MPC1000 recording inputs.

get jjosxl and use the included bit crusher. that ish is decent imho.

I wouldn't recommend the S2000 as a sampler. But I have one and use it as a DIY synth thing. The S2000 has preloaded sine/saw/quare/pulse waves on it. It has filters and lfo, but it's a hassle to get through the submenus. I use a monotron for filtering and a tremelo guitarstombox effect to kind of get a synth. Works nicely and it's cheap!

If you want a more 'old' sound you can get a S900/S950, they also have a sinewave onboard.
