MPC as a slave with Ableton Live 9 and Mbox Pro 3

Hi all

first post here!

I have a MPC1000, i'm trying to use it in different ways, one would be to use it alongside Ableton Live 9 as a midi controller as i struggle to get into stuff with just the MPC. Building a whole track on this seems like a daunting task

My question is what the connections should look like with my current setup, is it;

MPC connects to iMac via a midi-usb cable

or does it need to be

MPC connects to Mbox Pro 3

not entirely sure how this should work and would appreciate some input. I've lost my breakout cable for the mbxo too so if it does need to connect to this i would need to find a cable somehow...

Mbox into computer, set this up in Ableton to handle all audio and MIDI duties.

MPC1000 audio outs into Mbox audio ins
MPC1000 MIDI OUT into Mbox MIDI IN
Mbox MIDI OUT into MPC1000 MIDI IN.

I wrote a book - 'Using the MPC With Ableton Live', this covers pretty much everything you can do with an MPC1000 and Live, with all step-by-step sets up etc.

Can i ask why the MIDI OUT of the Mbox Pro 3 needs to go into the MIDI IN of the MPC? Is it naive of me to think this is a one way street i.e. the MPC talking to Ableton to trigger events (Drum pads in ableton)

Also, i cannot find a replacement breakout cable for the Mbox. Is is possible to somehow find a firewire to midi cable, unless a find a suitable breakout cable i'm left with little options?
