Understanding the powers of MIDI

I've had my mpc for about a year now, and im getting real comfortable with it. Now im looking to get a computer setup, most likely involving Sonar 4.

I've never used the cpu in conjunction with the mpc, and the MPC was in intro the midi.

I have a very specific setup im looking to create, but i figured this thread could even go beyond that. but lemme get to wat i wanna know first...

I want to be able to create my beat on the mpc as usual, with the keyboard i have, and then when i create all my different variations, i want to be able to record the midi info into the cpu and sequence it from there (as far as arranging the instruments so certain things can drop out when i want them to, and i can add things to it on the cpu, as far as instrument solos's etc...) i think yall get the gist of wat i wanna do, is it possible and is Sonar the right program for that? thanks

yeah , it's possible , i'm using cubase to do it (not sure if it's the best program for it tho).
You can just record your midi directly into cubase and sequence there , but there is one problem , as far as i know you can only use one program if you are playing your samples from an external device , it only receives midi on the track that's currently selected.(talkin bout the mpc1k here)

when you say i can only use one program, does that mean if i have one programs for my drums kits, and one program that has chopped up samples and loops, that i would be unable to track it in. wat about if i just put the samples and drum loops on the program, couldnt u just import them in?

The mpc1000 only receives midi on the active track and knowing you can only use one program on a track , you can only use one program if you play the mpc via midi that was recorded onto a computer sequencer.
So if you wanna work the way you want , forget about midi , sync your DAW ( computer sequencer of choice ) to your MPC and record your different tracks as loops as audio.
That way you can arrange al your stuff using wave files instead of the midi data.
Just sync the mpc to your pc ( this way you won't have to cut the silence at the beginning of each loop) so the mpc starts when you press record in your DAW , then record all your different drum parts , synth parts , vocal parts , breakdowns , etc... and once you've recorded it all you can start arranging all the loops and make your track.
