that's because you are going about it wrong. actually for your first question. you have to save individual samples and seqs to memory card unless you want to save entire memory to internal mem.
now for the trimming......
you are in the right screan. you were able to trim to the start/end points you wanted. now follow these steps after you get to that point. once you have your start/end points, press f6 (edit) then scroll to extract. you will see the name of the sample in the top left with a number next to it. (that's your trimmed sample) when you go back to the main screen select the pad you want the trimmed sample on then press mode+pad7 (program) and scroll to the new sample. voila!! your trimmed sample is now on the pad you wanted. then you can just either save that new sample by itself or save it in the pgm that you are working in. but save to the CF card unless you're saving as above.
