Now, this ain't gonna give you any automatic timestretching so you have to use a sample that matches the tempo yer playing.

Thanks - the whole point is, I *don't* want timestretching, and I don't want the loop to match any tempo. I want different samples looping at different speeds. If they are all locked to the same tempo, they just end up sounding like one repeated loop - Ok for hiphop or rock, but not for what I want.

Looks like I am better off keeping the 505 and 606 or buying two second hand 303's (smaller and more compact). That way I get a combined 4 outputs and 16-voice polyphony, plus I can play big samples straight off a smart media card without having to load them into RAM.

No probs. The MPC is a great machine for beatmaking - which the Roland machines are lousy at. The Rolands have one good feature - that I need! Thanks for helping me work this out.

you can use an Akai s20 sampler for looping samples seamlessly.
The s20 is very cheap today (150 euro), and they will loop, and also reverse in real time any looping sample. You can change loop points in real time, you can pitch up and down the samples in real time etc.

the s20 is a great looper with many hands on features to modulate the playing loops in real time. you may want to check it out, instead of using addiutional roland gear. it will extend your possibilities. check out as well the akai remix16 (wich is actually an s20 with added features (including a dj style mixer).
The s20 is limited in terms of numberr of samples in RAM (16 max), and only 16 pads available at once. no velocity sensitive, no fx, no filters. It is 16 bit 32 kHz, and saves on diskettes. Polyphony is 16, and if needed, the s20 can be played as a 16 part multitimbral midi module.
