I did a quick search, and didn't find anything, so I thought I would post how I fixed a dead pad.
I had just bought my mpc1000 and straight from the store plugged it in, and the #8 pad just wouldn't work.
Disclaimer!! I have a fair amount of experience opening electronics up.. so don't do it if you're not sure about it.
I opened it up, and unscrewed the pad board. If you look on the underside of the board, there are a couple wires that drop down from each pad, ending in a connector that plugs into a little socket... well sure enough, the #8 pad's connector was in it's socket, but not plugged in all the way. I gave it a little push and felt it click in. Reassembled the unit, and viola, a working pad.
