You shoundn't be so ironic, my mother tongue isn't english (you got that already) I just hoped this thread would be a ... well repository for great techniques. My "story" was just there to stress my point, and if anybody wonders, my beats sucked then (not because of the lack of nice soft, just because I sucked). BTW most of my beats still stink.

I have been using the XL since it's release and just sold it for the 1k. I'm happy with it. So here is my simple technique for distortion. (you may or may not know) I just turn the record gain all the way up when sampling. Simple and effective and it will free up an effect. It works really great on drums.

Scratching with the MPC in case you have a crappy turntable:
First sample and layout a program with a bunch of sampled cuts. Then sample a clean phrase. Next assign the sample and the cuts under the same mute group. Assign the main sampled cut to the q link slider assigned to pitch. Now you can scratch on your mpc like a turntable. I haven't tried it on the 1000 yet but I know it works for the XL.

i don't have much tricks but i'll try with a few advice (as i sort off understood you got your mpc quite recently).

_ i like sometime to use the main compressor to overdrive a bit (by compressing quite a lot and then raising the gain of the main compressor). can be subtle and sound nice on snares.

_ getting a footswitch (around $7 maybe) to launch overdub recording is a great and cheap addition.

_ in step edit there are quite a few functionalities which i first overlooked (multiple select, copy&paste beetween tracks, record, overdub record, locate buttons + "play end", left arrow to go back to the time from any event)

_ to erase all modulations in a track, in main window, hilight the track and press erase (for some odd reason i "discovered" this only a few weeks ago...)

_ using the log view in trim mode

so truvc, you can multiple select in step edit? i heard about this but never knew how?????? can u change the volocity of all that u selected?

"shift + up or down" and then turn main wheel to select more.
you canot modify the velocity this way, but you can delete events faster, and do copy&paste (and also change track to paste on different track)

Ooooh, my english is that bad .
No I have the 1k for more than a year (I've read the manual from cover to cover), yet I find interesting any input, for example yours is reminding us ,multiple selection and can help.
I hadn't thought about mrClock's idea, but it seems really interesting. If I understand this well you don't even need a mixer to use this tech (too bad I truely love my mixer). The "push buttons" bonus in shadow's DVD "Live in tune and on time" exhibits similar use of the mpc, but you still need the mixer.

Actually, to simulate the crossfader, I assign a blank pad to the same mute group. That way you can stop the samples in dead silence. I might have an old example of it somewhere on MD. I will try to look tonight and MP3 it. You can get really creative with it if you use a bunch of different scratch sounds.

The example would be great, that's nice to see that kind of feedback. (along with the tone synth emulation).
