Your live setups

I originally posted this in the newbie forum, but I thought I'd post it here too.

What are you guys doing for your live shows? Live drum programming? Sequencing other sounds? Controlling other devices with your 1000? Let me know what your setups are like...i'm interested.

okay Live set up Um... My Mpc of course, Numark tt-1, sk2f, and roadcases. Thats about it. For sample I use my own sample that I make and sample that i collect over the years, As for programming my drummer just got a click with those nice sure ear head sets so that we can be in sync with one another. no matter what, so I would have a sequence looping to his click machine and take out parts here and there.

Live playing is my focus, so I've been working on this setup for awhile-4 boxes and 1 mixer::

mpc1k, dave smith evolver, future retro revolution (google it!), and elektron machinedrum. Now I just need a better mixer cause mine is like a clone of a Behringer (if you can imagine what that means ).

My style is dance music, Detroit Techno the biggest influence, but I add sampled layers which come from f***ng around with my friends on guitar, horns, hand drums whatever.


My basic approach with the setup is: my songs exist as combinations of different Patterns stored on the md/evo/revo... so I re-sequence and re-mix the patterns live and tweak the f*** out of all the knobs . The purpose of the 1k is two things:: master clock and controller for the other the stuff (so i can jam out new melodies or drum fills when inspiration strikes), and phrase sampler to fly in parts of the tracks that use samples.

When the new os comes, i'm gonna put more time into practising live performance 'scratching' type tricks with the 1k.

(random shout-out, hi mux, proper techno is the sh***t. )

i am also into techno livesets

mpc1k at the centre, controlling 1 dsi evolver (playing its own sequences) and an analog mfb synth2 (which has lots of knobs ).

a 4u rack with :
a behringher quad compressor (the best thing behringher ever did imo)
a dp/2 ensoniq multieffect (fat and dirty)
a tc electronic m300 mutieffect (nice clean reverbs and delays)
(and one day an analog filter, maybe the allen&heath one )

on top of the rack i put my mackie 1402 vlz mixer to mix all that (using all the out of the mpc1k)

also a kenton midi controller to tweak the evolver and the dp2.

and with all that i remix my sequences live. (but try to get more into also tapping some stuff live, which i used to do with the electribe es1)

one of the think (amongst other) which i find great with the mpc1k, is the 8 caracters available for track name. no need to write stuff on annoying peaces of paper anymore, everything written in the mpc!!

Only done 1 live set...MPC and Korg MS20 (just as a filter with the occasional blast of oscillator), had all my Sequences (Songs) Lined up and then just muted and unmuted tracks as I felt like it.

I kept them all the same BPM and then just hit the next sequence button when I felt like it, so it was a continuous mix.

Oh, and dance about a bit. Nothing worse than seeing some grim flowers staring his machines and pretending to do something cos hes too scared to look at the crowd.

haha yes indeed .
i started gigging fairly recently, so i normally shyt myself BEFORE the gig, but i try to look at the crowd during the gig (mainly to check if all the punters are not all gone )

a few time i noticed some cats doing "live sets", pretending to tweak eqs on the mixer, but not actually turning the knobs, or even better, doing it on the wrong channel.

Well sadly I don't own a 303 but my 101 does the job OK... But I suppose yeah, Bleepy bassy madness. I call it one-step (jk)

Definitely some cool stuff that you guys are doing. I was looking at getting involved in some projects that are going on my town. I am trying to get feel for how I would approach a live setting. Possibly total improvisation with my 1000 for on the fly banging out drum patterns and maybe a laptop and reason for playing out basslines. Not really sure. Your input is greatly appreciated.

DnB/HipHop type LivePA. MPC1000, XL7, Motifrack, Laptop running reason, Axis9 and AN1X. Little Soundcraft mixer and a mic of course for rocking the crowd. What a hassle to tote around though! I usually write the beats with a live show in mind. Sometimes I'll have to do some preproduction for a show which usually involves resampling phrases into the MPC so I can make smooth transitions from track to track.

Man, try carring an upright bass, small combo amp, laptop, dj mixer, mpc, fx module and a turntable...

And if I really feel like torturing myself, I'll throw in an MS 20.
