A few things buddy. Ns10's have horrible low end frequency reponse, loud mids, and they completely annoyed me. My dad did good mixes on them but a beginner like myself had trouble with em. Also if you buy a ns10 used off of ebay, you really don't know how good this speaker is going last or tranlate your mixes well. I have some tiny tinny sounding Hafler M5's but I am saving for some fostex pm1's.
Triple Green... most people say the point behind the NS-10's is that they sound horrible. But, if you can get your mixes to sound good on NS-10's then they will sound good anywhere. Most studios I know that have NS-10's also have another pair of general use reference monitors to use for recording sessions or general use listening. NS-10's are used mainly for checking mixes. Because of the bad low frequency response if your mix is too bassy/muddy on the NS-10s then you KNOW it's too muddy in general. Everything is relative though.
When I was searching for monitors I looked for NS-10's but ended up buying a pair of KRK V6's that's I'm very happy with. I've had them for over a year, and soon I'll get the subwoofer so I can really hear what's going on at the bottom of my sound.

I use the V6's too. How much I like them depends on what room they are in. Don't underestimate how much the room and placement effect the sound of you monitoring system.
By the way, I hate the way NS-10's sound too.....but if you can get used to them, you'll be ready to step into any (NS-10 equipped) studio with more perspective.
I think they are better for rock though, because there's more going on in the midrange and not as much in the low end. For hiphop/club music, I would get something that tells more of the whole story in the bottom end.

Yeah you're right itchy vinyl, my dad played keyboards and sometimes filled in for the bass player in a funk band that he records in his attic. that was probably why he had a better time with em. He only had the ns10's three months before he died and my stepmother sold all his equipment cause I was a lil boy who knows nothing about music. Her jazz bad used a studio anyways. oh well
