Standalone 1000 fun.

So.. what is absolutely neccessary
I'm new to the production side and am looking to get the MPC1000. Can I just use it with my PC or do I need other equipment?

Well mate this was what I was hoping to show with other peoples help that the 1000 can be used as stand alone. It does depend on what you want to make. If you wanted to write a full film score from scratch then no the MPC wont do that. It's a sampler at the end of the day.

What a lot of people do is sort out their samples on their PC. Recycle is a damn handy tool to have not only to chop up beats fast but to put in instrument samples for an example. Slice up the instrument sample in Recycle like an acoustic guitar riff or an orchestral part you nicked off a classical album then you just Chuck it all into the MPC and assign the individual sliced up audio you did in recycle to the different pads. You can slice it up in the MPC itself if you wanted to.

With the MPC you can sample in or using USB or PC card reader transfer samples from your PC over to the MPC. You can timestretch, pitch, tune, trim, chop up samples. add FX (internal) or attach a hardware FX rack to the outputs on the back of the MPC. Loads of stuff can be done with just the MPC1000. You got the hard drive option and midi if you later got yourself some new kit. It's a good hardware sequencer also.

What sort of stuff are you thinking of making or want to make with it mate?

The evolver is sickness man. I started out on a korg polysix 800 and a virus b and I must say that the evolver is by far the best synth i've ever used. I've gotta check out that MFBlite though.. I've been wanting a simple synth dedicated for bass... was considering another evolver. but i think if i had two evolvers the mpc1k would get jealous ;D I bought my mpc with the intent of getting rid of my laptop for composing. I've found that having a limited set of tools really pushes YOUR creativity. When I used my laptop to make tunes I only used kontakt and reaktor... they were limitless and I never really felt a 'personal' vibe from anything I made with them. But the mpc is awesome, it becomes your friend after you spend some time with it. I can see myself upgrading to a 2500 in a year or so from now.

eg. my dsi evolver. That's a sick combo, cause i can use the mpc to do the drums, then trigger melodies off the evo, sample them in and f** with them more and add more layers. i leave it on input thru and anytime i find a cool tweak or sound blip on the synth, the sample button is RIGHT THERE.

basically the mpc plus any synth can turn it into a super-synth.

Hip-hop tracks. I definitely want to sample and throw some ill percussion with those. I also am looking to make some beats from scratch too.

Talking about standalone MPC1000 productions, all the tracks on my both myspace (djablo + dubpiraterna) pages are done with the MPC alone....

whats up yall, i've been into beat making for about 5 years now, and its all about how you use your equipment....nothin to do with quality..an mpc1k and a turntable is all i need...well, also a tascam cdrw 750 (for burning cds).....everyone told me i needed a motif, a triton, a computer, well if thats what you use and its you, do it. if you work hard enough, the sound will be your own and theres your style

i couldnt agree with you more ziggy, people would be surprised how much one can do with very little....

you only need pen and paper to write a masterpiece the same with music, keep it simple dudes..... heck i could do an entire album just with samples from one LP....

Excellent mate. Lots of peeps have said it's worth checking out the Evolver. If one comes my way I will have a go on it for sure.

People will always say you need this and you need that. They did to me when I first started and when you first get into stuff you listen to them don't you and think god I need all of that? Using the computer has opened so much up for people but I never had that option when I first started. I agree with what your saying bud. The early days of making music I found was really fun an hands on and your right with what you said about being able to make stuff with whatever you have.

i feel like im working backwards when in the studio because i have to much stuff at my disposal. I have tried to simplify things but i usually end up with mpc , nuendo a rack full of effects and my zoom streetbox to do 1 song. I would say the vstis are the most frustrating when you have the choice of over 100+ ( serious ) its hard to dedicate to a certain sound and not want to keep changing and i feel tracks are never done. I am more productive with the mpc , a turntable and my zoom streetbox than with everything else. So many good points made here by everyone. I think if akai would have just made the option of having a tone gen in them with sound roms to add ala emu mp7 style it would have make my life easier. but to each his own happy productions.

Yes mate the more stuff you have the more you don't get deep into each synth and that is bad really. I have too much crap now and really must stop and use/learn what I have. I didn't turn on any of the hardware today just messed about with Reason. If only you could get that much scope in one single hardware rack eh.

Made this today. The music etc were done in Reason 3. It's about having an electronic lover lol.
