is the HD worth it?

Depends. Are you using a software sequencer or is your 1k the master?

There´s no chance a 5400 rpm disc should not be able to keep a single stream of audio intact without clicks or dropouts. You might be needing to look at faster discs when you head for 8 or more of simultaneous tracks or to record several tracks while the disc is playing back several tracks. There isn´t any need to install top of the line HD´s as I´ve seen some are doing, if the MPC 1000 was a multitrack recorder I´d see the point, but saving and loading samples, usually under 5 MB, isn´t such a demanding task.

I have experienced some lagging when I audition, as I change sample and press audition it takes a moment before the samples auditions, I would guess that has something to do with OS 2.1 as I have felt the same lagging sometimes when editing samples and moves through and between screens.

btw, i think the lagging when auditioning may be due to the processor of the mpc, as opposed to the OS. i think the mpc2500 has the same processor, so if it does, it would be worth looking into on the 2500 forum.

Sure, the processor is probably a factor. But it´s powerful enough to at the same time trigger several samples dead on from RAM and to keep 32 samples running simultaneously. There got to be other bottlenecks than that.
The fact that it reads "off RAM" might probably be a factor. Another is probably the OS.
It would be interesting to hear what somebody who understands code would say about the "cleanliness" of the new OS. The overall impression I get from software development is that it´s getting more sloppier by the minute. As the power of the hardware grows the programmers care less and less about optimizing and cleaning the code. If the commercial coders of today would work like the coders of the mid 80´s that made creative and groundbreaking use of hardware equivalent of a modern scientific calculator our computer OS, DAW´s and plug in´s would be in a different class. Limitations is the key to succes not only in music.

I am not speaking bad about OS 2.10, it´s really great in both functions and usability. Just as the HD it greatly improved the relationship to my MPC, made it more direct and easy to get around in. Only a few minor bugs that I certainly can live with and the slight lagging in certain screens and during some operations. Even though it lags it´s till faster to work with than earlier, and that´s what counts.

Sloppy coding could be possible, given the examples you stated. I wouldn't know personally, since the last time I did any type of programming was in Basic, which was back in the early to mid '80s.

That explains your love for the Sidstation then. I had one of those a few years ago but sold it after half a year, too much edge and too hard sounding and for me.
