The largest akai officially tested was 80gb. I'm running 100gb but that is more than enough. Just ti give an idea - an average file size for sampled song from vinyl is 45mb. I can get over 2000 (that's not a typo) songs (full songs) on the hard drive + a shiz load of one shots. So to do what you want, 100 is good enough. I know some of the 4k users use 120. If you want, buy it, test it and post it up in the sticky.

..cool..thanks..yeah, I'm using an 80GB 7200RPM Seagate Momentus, and it works great....I was pondering the idea of the 120GB version, as an upgrade..just to max out my MPC....

But, yeah...your right, even @ 80GB...that is more than enough room.

Thanks!

Exactly!!!! That's what I like, I just ditched computer based recording as well, went back to good 'ol DAW (Korg D1200mkII). I just prefer hardware based units over computer, software counterparts.

Actually guys, I tested 3 other drives w/ the MPC1000, a 40GB Samsung SpinPoint (5400 RPM), and a Hitachi TravelStar (7200RPM), and my current Seagate Momentus 7200.1 (7200RPM). The Momentus wins hands down as far as Autoload time, and sequence load times.....I know, I know, we're talking a matter of a second or two, but still.......you can see the performance difference between the other drives....

Think about it, if your MPC is at the heart of your studio, like alot of us, wouldn't you want the best, most reliable storage solution you could find? :P

For those who would be king (at least for a month or two):

Seagate Momentus 160GB 2.5" IDE Hard Drive for $308
10:28 am ET, Mar 6, 2006

Nowdirect.com offers the Seagate Momentus 5400.3 160GB 2.5" IDE Hard Drive, model no. ST9160821A, for $308. That's the lowest price we've seen by $12. Add $7.75 for 3-day shipping. This is a 5400 rpm notebook hard drive with an 8MB cache.

(I am not recommending it though. I still wonder if heat will become a factor with large/fast drives .. I have no idea, but that is an expensive way to be a guinea pig)

Where can I get the HD kit and 100gig hard drive from? This coupled with the new OS 2.10, I have no need for my Mac anymore. I'll probably sell my S950 and S2000. I thought a 1gig compact flash card was something til I found this website. Holy Sh*T! I appreciate all of your help. A new day has dawned!
