MPC 1000 Hard drive question

I have a MPC1000 and a used hard drive and I would like to know if there is any way to format it in the MPC or do I need to format it before I install it. If not is there any other way to erase all of the files and the OS off the hard drive while in the MPC.

i put a harddisk in mine this weekend and i just formatted it through the usb connection via my pc.... well at least the second time.... because the first time i formatted my compact flash card with all my recent FRUCKIN BEAT ON IT GODDRAMNIT!

no no no. you can format it completely within the mpc. you do not need to connect it (should not) to the computer. after you install the hard drive, format it just like you would format the CF card. go to either the load or save screen, (it doesn't matter which one) then go to utilities, then select the hard drive and format it.
