formating my memory card

This might be really stupid. when i turn my mpc on with my memory card in, it freezes. when i turn it on and insert it after, nothing happens. when i try to format the disk, it either says, no disk, or it freezes again.
is this a card issue or an mpc issue??

try formatting the card on your computer first, then inssert it in the mpc and format it again. some cards can be a hassle, from what i've read. so try this first, and if you have no luck try another card.

btw, what brand and model card are you using? also, if you have the original card that came with the mpc, try that as well with the method i mentioned above.

make sure that you don't have your usb cable connected to your mpc. i don't know if you have it connected or not, but i feel it would be quicker to inform you of what i can in one reply in order to save us both some time.

ok. i've ran into a new problem. I cant get my mpc to connect to my computer. until now i have been just recording audio and trimming my samples. i have followed the instructions in the manual, the mpc says it is connected, but no hardware icon appears on my computer. i am using a G5 IMac with OSX Panther. This is horribly frustrating and i'm beginning to worry.....

oh yeah, i'm just using the standard 32mb card i got with the mpc. i'm still to expand my mpc, but i'm totally skint just now so i'll have to wait a few weeks....aaahh how frustrating!!

Do you have the card in the MPC when you connect it to your computer?
You'll need to insert a CF card in the MPC for it to appear as a DRIVE icon on your desktop.
So did the Akai 32MB card work before? If the card is corrupt this might be the reason it doesn't appear on your Mac.
Maybe you can test and format the card somewhere else, synth-shop?

yeah, my mate is going to try and format my card on his mpc and computer. hopefully that will solve the format/load/save issues i'm having. if not i will buy a new card and try the same procedures.

what is the CF card?

the way i've been trying to hook them up is as follows

insert the card, press mode - load. then press usb and it says now connect to computer. I then connect the two devices with the usb cable and the status on the mpc says connected. no device appears on my desktop and my mpc freezes until i eject my card.

CF card is just short for Compact Flash card (memory card).

Your way of connecting the MPC to the computer is correct.
The fact no device is appearing at your desktop is a sign there's something wrong with either the card or the card-reader inside your MPC (hopefully it's the first).
It's normal for the MPC to 'freeze' after connecting it to your computer. Problem is, no "removable media" icon appears on your desktop....
DON'T eject your card while it's connected to your computer!
Normally you'd drag the "removable media" icon to your trash, after that you can remove the USB cable and you can change modes on the MPC again.
In your case it would have been better to turn of your Mac and then unplug the USB cable. Then your MPC should say "not connected".

i'm soo happy its probably not my computer. i just got my logic board changed and i've replaced my harddrive under waranty. and still problems. thank you so much for your help.
hopefully i'll be sorted by next week
