midi technical issue

i recently picked up the 1000 to use as a midi master sequencer for a roland mc-303, a microkorg, an electrix vocoder and an effects processor. currently i use a tiny qy-100 to send out midi information to all of those -- sending everything from music/note data to hexadecimal 12 number long commands. hell, i've even memorized some pc and cc numbers, so i know midi pretty damn well, but it's still a mother.

what i want to do is use the 1000 like i'm using the qy, and it works for sending the midi info out to the slaved roland mpc 303, but my microkorg (midi channel 1) will only pick up the time clock when i play a sequence on the 1000(the light blinks in time) -- it will not recieve pc changes and does not send thru messages to the vocoder (channel 16) and effects processor (channel 15). i don't understand, as the roland is recieving everything normally, but the korg isn't? is there something i'm missing? i've tinkered with all midi set up possibilities (from what the manual says) in the 1000.

also, is there a way to record midi data from an external sequencer to the 1000 and have the 1000 recieve all midi channels at once (not all channels bulked onto one track).

Yes, you can but its how your starting your midi Chain..
break it down and start from the mpc and work your way out bit by bit testing each step as you go. As you do that you will understand whats not working etc.

Remember once you midi out to the 303 then it's midi thru from there on. here's how it should loook!.


Main Sequencer ---MPC/out to-Roland 303 in/ Roland thru to/micro-in/mirco thru to 100-in/100 thru to PC in. Then PC midi out to MPC in, That should work. Let us know how it works.

It's about the correct midi chain.

actually, the mpc wasn't sending any program changes at all for both korg and 303 (the 303 was playing the normal sounds before because i already loaded them in from the other sequencer). i discovered that in sequence mode, you select the program you want for the given track -- there's a special one the comes up last and when you hit window, you can get into the thick of things as far as midi pc changes are concerned (msb/lsb), but after i worked that out, the sounds aren't right at all -- the numbers are corresponding to different sounds than what they should be. i'm sure i can keep doing trial and error and figure out what makes this difference and how to solve it, but that's last resort -- and if that doesn't work, then i'm just going to have to sample everything, which would lighten the load but take forever.

the roland 303 doesn't have a thru. i was using a midi merge box to split the signal anyway. i think i'll try saving my songs in smf mode and then loading via usb and see what happens. i think i've at least narrowed down the problem zone to the program select on each track.

There's confusion here as you're using PC to mean "program change" and people think you've got a computer in the MIDI chain haha.

Realize that in order to have program changes sent upon playing back a sequence on the 1k, Send Program Change has to be activated. Dunno whether you were doing this before or not.

MIDI Thru on the MPC can be set to "none", "current track" or "all" I believe, so make sure this is set correctly.

Also, note that the MPC1k does not send or receive MTC, only regular MIDI Clock.

There's no way to "enable record" on more than one track at once in the MPC, unfortunately.

thynktank was right,you have to activate the Program change in the MPC to send.To do this go to mode:midi sync mode, then look at the third line and turn Sequence Program change to : ON----------hope that helps.

thanks guys. i got it figured out pretty well -- loading the smf files is a breeze. i had everything set up correctly in the midi settings window, but it was the program field that needed to be changed to "No. 1" and then set to send program change messages. it's always simple when you know...
