Is there an ultimate fix "Directory Error"?

Hello, i've started getting directory error when saving too.
my thoughts could this be a virus?
another is... is it a recently posted shortcut maybe like the "mode trim" (park hard drive) that has screwed the hard disk?

I'm getting confused reading all the threads can someone tell me if there is an ultimate simple fix

I have the ultimate fix, but it requires 2 CF cards

If you have two CF cards, take out the one that you're trying to save to and put your other card in and it will save. Works for me all the time. If you want to transfer the files to the card you got the error on, turn on the usb and save it to your pc and then transfer the file to your the first card you used.

I will post this once again.. I developed this workaround and it has been working 100%... I havn't had a single error since I started using it. When I typed it, it was in response to someone who was having the "New Folder Bug", but it can solve your directory errors too. Remeber, before starting to use this method, backup and then reformat your CF card to get a fresh start with no file corruption.

It looks more complex than it really is.

The method I have for avaoiding the new folder bug involves "refreshing" the directory tree before creating the new folder. I was getting the new folder bug quite frequently, but since I started this "refresh technique, I have not gotten a single error. Here's what I do:

1. In the SAVE directory tree, I move the cursor to the folder I want to save to and I hit RENAME, then in the RENAME dialog I hit COPY. This step is only so that I don't have to re-enter the individual letters when I get to step 5.

2. Close the RENAME dialog then delete the folder.

3. Close the directory tree. (At this point, if you go back into the directory tree, you will see that, in fact, the folder you just deleted has magically re-appeared as if it had never been deleted. Going back into the tree is not actually a step I take in the saving process, it is simply something strange I noticed when I was originally troubleshooting it.)

4. Here's where the "refresh" comes in... So after closing the directory tree (step 3), you should be back in the main SAVE dialog. Move the cursor up to the field at the top where you select where you want to save (i.e. MEMORY CARD or INTERNAL MEMORY or HARD DISK if you have one). I then change the option to INTERNAL MEMORY, and then I change it back to MEMORY CARD. That's the "refresh". Now the directory tree correctly reports that the folder was, in fact, deleted.

5. I then hit NEW to make a new folder, then in the NEW FOLDER dialog I hit PASTE (since i copied the name of the folder in step 1).

6. Then I SAVE ENTIRE MEMORY to the folder I just re-created.


I'm assuming this method would work for saving to the hard drive too, but I haven't been able to test that since I don't have a hard drive installed.

As far as I can tell, it is the combination of not overwriting, and "refreshing" that has eliminated the error for me. since I have been saving like this I have had ZERO errors. Give it a try and let me know if it works for you.

I would recommend a backup and reformat if you have been having the error a lot because you probably have some corruption already on the disk which could cause additional headaches later.

When I get the directory error, I just try and save again. I have never had it come up twice in a row. Does anyone know anything wrong with this method?

i'm on this fix however having to mod it a bit cause im using an internal hard drive.
The deleting folder and refreshing directory sounds perfectly logical to me and big ups for the copy/ paste name tip too.

So you've saved a project onto your cf, then u do some more work (including editing smples and more sampling etc etc)
and you want to save it again. how do you go about it? (cos it's bad to over- write files isn't it - they get corrupted??)

Thanks guys, this thread has really sorted me out (my cf's are working again) but I still don't really have a handle on this. I think a combination of creating new folders and over-writing each time I saved was screwin me up.

Now I know how to create a folder safely and save safely.
What about re-saving?

I was doing that in the beginning when I first started getting the error. I would just try it again, and it seemed to save fine, but then eventully, my CF Card had a sh1tload of corrupted files on it and I'm suspicious that it may have had something to do with the errors since I no longer have all that corruption going on.

What about re-saving?

The 6 steps I listed above are for re-saving.

I think your "reset" thingy really helps

I've got a spare 128MB CF that I'm double backing to too.

Since I started naming all my files properly too (instead of sometimes keeping defaults like Sequence01, Sample 01 etc) I think the CF is even happier, no error messages so far.

Also a decent folder system to avoid duplicate files etc now.

I've encountered corrupted programs when I use this method.

Refreshing the HD directory seems to be holding strong. I'm devaling a bit deeper with my Folder structure now. Fingers crossed.

I can imagine if directory refresh was the problem it's something that Akai could code out in the next OS update but really I hope they don't do away with ALL the quirks of this characterful machine eh?
