i just got my mpc1000. i downloaded 808 samples from multiple sources(all free, or next to free). i put them on my mpc via usb no problem, but the samples are really quiet. are these just bad samples, or am i doing something wrong?
should i expect to pay a lot for good samples, or do i just need to know where to look for the free quality ones?

yeah,
that's one of the places i got samples from. they seem really quiet when i dump them onto the mpc from my mac... at least quiet compared to the factory preset samples.

if i have the volume maxed out i can hear everything okay, but it seems like it should be able to get a lot louder.
the factory preset samples are crazy loud when i max the volume.

Try going to trim mode, then normalize the samples. That will make them louder (although it will also make any noise in there louder too...)

I don't know, i deleted the factory presets before i got home.
But in general every sample sounds different. Some are compressed/limited to the max. Others are kept dynamic.
Expen$ive commercial samples aren't necessarily gonna give you louder sounds.
See if normalizing works on the quiet samples.
Other than that i wouldn't worry about it too much, as long as they work in your mix.

all i know how to do in the trim mode is set the start/stop time for the sample. is there a way to increase the volume of the sample when i'm in there?
regardless, i should be able to take the samples from 808.org and put them straight on to my mpc without having to boost their signal right?

i'm looking through the manual and i don't see "normalize" anywhere... how do you "normalize" a sample?
sorry for all the questions, i appreciate your help.

Trim mode -> edit -> use the data wheel to select normalize. It's on page 66 of the V2.0 manual.

It's worth getting the electronic copy of the manual, in .pdf format, from www.akaipro.com (follow links through the 'support' section to get to product manuals), because you can use the search function to look for you!

got it.
thanks,
so i cross checked the volume with other drum machines i have, and it's just as loud as those, i guess the preset samples that come with are just crazy loud. i deleted them... so now it's all good.

thanks for the help!
