Can you make a beat strictly from step edit?

....or do you have to lay the beat down in sequence page, and then adjust in step edit. I'm wanting to know because I got a book from the library that goes through excercises on programming drums. I would like to follow along in the book.

The book is layed out for a typical drum machine where you can go and just input where you want the beats to be in a step edit like mode. You dont have to lay a sequence down first using pads or whatever. Can the 1000 do this? Apparantly if you choose 1/16 time on some drum machines you just plug in where you want the sound to be in spot 1 through 16.

I'm a little confused, actually with the step edit page. I would just like to be able to follow these excercises so I can get better at programming beats.

I write quit a bit of stuff out in Step Edit - It's easy and you have more control of note length, velocity etc

Just turn the NOW field to where you want to be in the song and either hit the pad (Overdub Rec has to be activated) or INSERT note (CC message, etc)

Yes.

How do you freak the step edit like how it was on the 2000xl? Seems more difficult with the 1000, more buttons to push. I cant do it without pushing the insert event button first. On the 2000, all you had to do was go to the time and press the pad with the sound on it that you wanted to step record and it was there. Now you have to press INSERT first

I've been reading the manual on my breaks at work today.

Apparently all you have to do is highlight the NOW sequence time which is in the top left hand corner of step edit. Put it on the time you want the event to occur and hit the pad. The event should drop down as a step just like an insert. Haven't gotten to it yet. Just got home from work and I'm sitting down to eat and check out the forums, so I actually haven't tried it yet.

OK just tried it! Actually you have to press overdub, and just overdub. Not overdub and play or some shit. go to now time, top left corner, put it on time you want beat to drop then hit pad. WALAH! dere U go!

I just finished my first little excercise. It's not very fun doing it this way, but I like the results. freaking velocity changes in here is much better. It makes the beats sound a lot more realistic.

I didn't try working on this page before because it was a little intimidating, and I didn't understand the manual. Now I'm glad I'm messing with it. Not as hard as I thought. Especially after really reading the manual again, and really paying attention

Can you adjust or replace the time events from within the step editor list?

For example - a kick is on 001.01.00 and you want to move it up a few ticks.
Is there a way to just scroll down the event list and adjust the time.
Do you have to make/insert a new note a few ticks ahead and then
delete the old one.

I know you can move the events from other screens.
I am asking specifically about the event list.
I don't see it in the manual.

For some strange reason you can't change the time values. When i want to move a kick some ticks i do the following:
- copy
- arrow left takes you immediately to the now field
- change the time value
- paste
- delete the old note

Maybe there's a better way, but i haven't found it.
