normalizing, turning that shit up

how can I make already-normalized samples louder? short of turning all other sounds down I mean. oh yeah and I use JJ os, most recent version. peace

tried editing the sample in cool edit via usb. for some reason, all that happens, my sample gets really clipped when I bring it back to MP. but in sample mode, the wave looks the same. *sigh* bump.

... ensure the original source level you are recording is good enough.

Are you using a preamp to boost the intial signal?

Changing the global master level on the MPC will make everything louder, tho I wouldnt do that...

How loud is louder? All the way up to 11?..

If the sample has a sharp attack or other 'peaky' part, that will be the limiting factor on how much you can turn it up. Normalizing will only turn it up until the peak hits 0dB.

That is when you might turn to _compression_ to squish that peak a little and bring the rest of the sound up in volume.

what I'm trying to do right now is add effects to the sample, resample it and add more effects. but when I sample the main out I'm not sure how loud it's recording at, because it doesn't show the peak whenever I'm resampling. it does record it though, just at a really low volume. like when I look at it in trim view, it's just a straight line, then I gotta normalize. thanks for the replies, I'm just gonna keep messing around with it I guess.

In the record window when you're resampling there's a peak meter. Turn the volume knob all the way up, then slowly turn it down while playing the sample until it doesn't hit the red (or fill the little box at the end) anymore. That will make sure your sample isn't a "flat line".

... it is best to change the global master level of the MPC from -12db to 0 when resampling.

Then when you have finished resampling/recording change it back to
-12db.

This will ensure that the level of the resampled sample is the same as it was in the original sample/sequence/song whatever.

This was probably why it was sounding quiet...

yeahh...well I can bring the levels up now, basically following advice thanks 2 jp.

the thing is, when I sample the main outs, and say I'm playin a beat, the peak meter shows nothing at all. so if it's clipping and shit, there's no way for me to know until after the recording. so, if anyone knows what I should be doing to fix that, cuz I've been lookin around and all, just let me know.
