I have a pair of Alesis M1 Active MK2s, but having decent monitors isn't the final solution. Read and follow the setup/positioning instructions that come w/ your monitors carefully; how they're positioned (ie, angle, distance from your head, distance from the wall, height, etc...) makes a HUGE impact. Also, I'm mixing in this crazy small nook in my house - not exactly ideal. I'm not sure about the technicalities of sound cancellation and what not, but I'm sure I'm a victim - often I listen to a mix that sounds hot in the monitors and garbage at my friends house.
Bottom line: Headphones, monitors, or My First Sony, whatever you monitor on, check it out in mono/stereo, at various volumes, in various positions in the room/car, on as many systems as you can, with or without green eggs and ham. Learn the strengths and weaknesses of your monitoring setup as you go and make the most of what you have.
