MIDI to external sampler - how do I get the "one-shot" EFX?

Is it possible to MIDI the MPC to an external sampler (in this case a Korg Triton) or let’s say an S950 and get the “one shot” effect when you hit a pad on the MPC as opposed to holding the pad down the whole time to get the whole sample to play?

In this case I am using an MPC 1000 v.2.10

The reason I ask this is because I was watching that new DJ Premier music video for Classics and in the beginning he loads up his samples in the S950 then starts hitting the pads on his MPC 60. If you listen, the samples obviously play “one-shot” style. Anyone here ever achieve this?


Or could it be he just loaded drum samples on the S950 and loaded the actually sounds on the MPC 60?

Your Q is not MPC related. Some samplers will play ONE SHOT samples when programmed to do so (e.g. the s950, also the s3000 series, etc). Others may not, and will onky play on NOTE ON.
so basically the answer is yes.

I think freezer said it was not mpc related because it is the setting on the other sampler which is important, not a setting on the mpc. As I understand the question (and that might not be saying much) the mpc would just be a trigger for s950 or triton or what evs. If you flipped the scenario and had, for example, a midi keyboard triggering the mpc then the note on setting on the mpc would be important.

I'm only just starting to get into midi so I would appreciate confirmation or corrections on this.

don't know the triton but the setting can be called amplitude envellope (adsr)

no, amplitude envelope settings may help mimicking the ONE SHOT setting (by setting a very long release time), but it is a different thing.

all smaplers will play in one shot mode.

they either have a dedicated feature you can activate,

or, you have to adjust the ADSR envelopes to achieve the desired eeffect

So I went and downloaded all the PDF's I could find off korg.com for the Triton Classic and did nto find anything about one-shot of ASDR. So when I got home last night I started going thru the different parameters in the program. So when you create a program from an MS, go into the program and under Edit parameters (I think) you can choose "Hold" which is equal to one-shot, and you can choose Mono or Poly.

So thanks a lot guys for sending me in the right direction. I can't believe I never noticed these features before, I feel like a newbie! lol.

maybe you will find the amplitude envelope (the ADSR) in a menu item called AMP EG or something like that. Or maybe Volume amplitude, since the envelope in this case is used to control the volume of the sample playback.
I am pretty sure the Triton has these settings too. You will find that ADSR settings can really help in shaping your sound, including on one shot samples.
