Saving entire Memory

I am using the mpc in a very simplistic way. I have 9 different sequences (what I call songs) that are used live. Each sequence has a different tempo that I use for a click and various samples that I either play with a Drum Kat or have the sequence start at various points. I want to save the entire memory to both the hard drive and memory card. When I save, it always comes up project 1, which I can type in my name, call it XXX. When doing this I put yes to replace and when I save, it looks as though all is going well, but then a directory error flashes. When I reboot and reload, it all works fine. Don't know what the error is all about and is there any way I can just save the memory to my XXX instead of always having to retype? thanks

Regarding the "Directory Error" message -- the Akai 2.1 OS has a known bug in it's drive formating routine which can cause gradual or immediate data corruption. It may not produce a functional problem right away but sooner or later etc. etc...Akai v1.07 supposedly does not have this problem, but that OS will not support a hard drive larger than 2 gigs. So the only method I know of for dealing with this is to backup all data and install the "illicit" JJ OS 3.06 (which corrects this error -- you can also use JJ v4 if you want to buy it) and re-format your drives. After that, you can re-install the Akai OS if you want too and the problem should, in theory, go away. The problem is not in the saving but the initial formating of the drive.

Regarding your other question -- I thought I've tripped over an option to change the default file saving name in one of the op systems but I can't remember where or which one or if it applied to complete projects. If it was Akai it should be in the manual. Last time I did it with a string of samples I recorded it did it automatically after I named the first one.. or so I remember.. Somebody else should chime in on this one...

Thanks for the info. I read all of the info, but how do you actually reformat the drives? I downloaded the update to I load it in like a sample? I would sincerely appreciate step by step instructions. Thanks for your time.

The instructions to format are in your manual as well.

I get this and have already formatted both the 80g hard drive as well as the 32mb card, but how do you introduce a new os that you download? thanks

Since you are upgrading from Akai 2.1 you will have to use the "old, clunky" OS installation method. The complete instructions can be found on the akaipro.com support page along with the official Akai OS downloads (you might want to grab a copy of 2.1 if you want it later as well):

Some additional notes: Do not place more than one OS .bin file at the root of the CF when using this method. Also when the install is complete, remember to power down and power back up again while holding the ERASE key. This is the default reset and will clear away any residual "weirdness" caused by the previous configuration or the upgrade process.

Drives should be formatted only when the above processes are complete and the JJ OS is up and running; formating beforehand with the Akai OS will not solve the problem as the Akai formatting routine is the problem to begin with. As I said you can easily downgrade back to Akai afterwards if you really want to, just don't format anything with that OS and you should be fine.

when i called VST, they referred me to the AKAI support team. The dude at VST explained that the directory error message could result if one of the pins gets bent on the memory card itself or if there is a poor connection between the CF card reader and the CF memory card.

I would call VST, they were very helpful and the tech did not hesitate to pass the problem along to someone who could help me.

I hope that this post may provide at least a little supplementary insight.

but more likely is due to poor coding from akai.

Ok, so... did you do anything to confirm that this was your actual problem? Visual inspection? Nudge the card around a bit in the slot to see if it can make contact? Anything?
