mpc 1000 bugs

- i work in Toronto at Long and Mcquade and have sold 40+ of the new MPC1000 to various heads- myself included. There were a few bugs with the OS - it would freeze deleting samples - OS update fixed that - but it now freezes occasionally loading samples - i've got the EXM-128 and CF cards to match - When loading the MPC sez (end of file !!) on a lot of samples - it also has crashed my Pentium3 once in a while trying to back up the samples to my desktop, which i think has made both machines more unstable.
Has anyone heard of any of this?
Overall this is an awesome machine - I still recommend it - it just gets frustrating when it crashes or freezes.
hoping they will add the time stretching and shift timing (earlier/Later) features into the OS.

I´m new to this Forum, and what you describe is exactly why i´m here.
My MPC freezes while loading samples, but only while loading/saving them from my new 128MB Flashcard.
I still have the old OS, but maybe my 38€ Memorycard is the Problem.
This is totally enerving, because it happens all the time, and then I´m not even able to load the whole Program anymore.
Tommorow i´ll buy me a new Memorycard and load down the newest OS.
Let´s see what happens...

I wouldnt rule out the flashcard. It would not suprise me one bit if certain flashcards freeze up the MPC. As far as connecting the MPC to the PC via USB you should go and buy an external flash card reader. They are around 25-30 bucks and it is WAY easier than hooking up the MPC itself to the comp.

removing any sample names that had spaces in them has stopped my MPC from crashing when it's loading stuff

These crashes I described are all using 128mb and 256 mb VERBATIM flash cards - which are suppossed to be fine

One thing I noticed is when I started puting everything in folders instead of just having samples and seq hanging out there i havent had any problems. Try that and see if it helps.

I've never had my 1000 crash on me once, or had any of these problems and I have loaded many a large sample, especiallly when I got the exm128. The 1000 has crashed my PC quite a few times, but it was because my PC was unstable. I used Norton utilities to get my PC back to a more stable state and then I never had the problem again!

and ive had os 1.02 1.03 and now 1.04 ......

I'm new (just ordered a MPC 1000, hasn't arrived yet) but wanted to chime in here about PCs and USB in general. My experience with USB is that sometimes it works great, and sometimes it doesn't. Some USB devices seem to work better with some USB ports than others. For example...

I have an MP3 player with a USB download... very similar concept to the MPC 1000 (it also shows up as a removable drive, etc.). When I use the USB port on the FRONT of my computer, the MP3 often crashes and/or freezes up the computer during transfers. However if I use one of the USB ports on the BACK of the computer, next to the kbd/mouse ports, it works flawlessly. On another computer I had, there were many issues with the motherboard chipsets and USB in general... I had to go to the motherboard website and download BIOS upgrades to get USB to work right. And then again, on ANOTHER computer, a USB card reader wouldn't work on any of the ports native to the PC (front or back), but worked flawlessly with a new PCI USB board that I plugged into a slot.

The only point is... in my experience, despite USB being around for years, it can be one of the least reliable technologies on your computer, and it hasn't matured a heck of a lot. Some people never have a day of trouble with USB, but then you get that *one* device that just doesn't work quite right. You just have to try different things, check for firmware upgrades (both device and computer) and maybe be willing to try a brand new USB card in your computer.
