basslines...

I've heard somewhere that there is supposed to be a way that on the mpc you can take a melody and extract the bass out of it. How do you do this? If someone could post detailed instructions on this i would greatly appreciate it b/c i'm new to the mpc and beat making all together.

mode+program+ press the pad or pads u wanna LPF on+ click f3 if im right=- filters. correct me if im wrong im new to this as well..

a low pass filter cuts out all of the frequencies above a cut-off point (i.e. it filters off the high frequencies).

for example, if you choose a cut-off point of 100hz then you will not be able to hear any of the mid range or treble - just the bass. hence being able to get a bassline.

however, you will still hear all of the sounds with low frequencies - such as kick drums and *sometimes* snares.

^^^ And that where sample selection comes in. Pick a good sample that has a solid bass sound and preferably little else going on in the song at that point. Preferably a bass solo, or maybe a break that has only drums and bass, or expiriment. Some times pianos and organs can be filtered to get great bass tones.

So no you can't 'extract' a bass sound, but you can sample and minipulate a bass sound.

looks to me like you want to extract the whole bassline itself,
that wouldn`t work, i think.
like the foreposters said, too much of other sounds,
you can like adviced, extract one single note from a bassline and use this for your own bassline with 16notes - for example,
or by using the q-link slider with tune, and play like this.

just sample bass notes or notes with a lot of bass in it

sample vsti's with bass sounds(or from reason or whatever)

put that sh!t on autochromatic.. hit and run

saxophones make bitchin bass sounds with the right filters and eq, too. pitch them way down, and they sound thick and sweet

i suckkkkk at making low end theory basslines, to the point where i was sour grapes about them til i heard a couple reaaaaally good uses of them where the bassline wasn't just the same sample used in the beat

also, try to get your hands on minimonsta.. it's a vsti replicate of the minimoog and you can get really nice basslines from it, just sample one note and put that fuqqer on autochromatic..(you can optionally hit up a LPF and mess around with that.. also; compressing the bass really helps making it pump..) even the internal akai compressor is capable of doing this..
