beat mixing

i have a mpc1000 and a roland sound module my beats are pretty good but my mixes suck when i put them on cd they always sound to muggy or to thin my kicks don't bang like i want my bass is weak but once i try to bring it up it drowns out everything any advice on how to mix my beats down

Layering..Layer Layer Layer. If your sound is weak, layer them. Also try using equing and compression. Check this article out:

Listen to the how the bass, kicks, snares etc sound on your system. Now mix your tracks. Be sure to listen to your reference cd before and after you mix your own tracks.

**You will never get the exact sound for the professional recording artists unless you have your tracks professionally mixed and mastered**, but can get it to sound really good on most systems. Just thought I'd mention that.

EQ is your friend here. What I do when I do my mixes is start from the drums up. I bring the kicks where i want them then bring the snares in then bass if the kick and the bass fight for position then i pull up an eq and sweep to find where they each come in the strongest. Then I simple eq that frequency out of the other.

EQ and compression and loads of practice ,however the compressor on the mpc is rubbish ,but if its all you got then learn to use it...for mixing basics ,you cant have all your noises doing the same frequencies otherwise it gets muddy ie kick drum and bass will share some frequencies,so you can take some out of the bass or out of the kick and it will tidy up the sound a little(disclaimer ..yer i know its a bit more complicated than this ,but its a good starting point)....play around with mixing for a year or two and it will all become clear to you ....loads of online resources about mastering,just google for them

try messing around with compression on your bassline, also, do you track out your beats? if yes, you got it covered, hit up your DAW program and start mixing.. using eq and compression is indeed most important..
