It does.
Only bad thing about the importing of it is that it's the same function as load sequence, so there is no possibility to specify a target track for the midi you are loading. (The result is a new sequence with the midi in track 1)

I'm not sure, but I'm fairly sure it just bungs them all into track one, on which you have to set one midi out channel.
Better work out those midi tracks into separate files in your software sequencer first.

Does it maen that I can't just load a standard midi file in the MPC and have it spread across 16 tracks in a single sequence?

Watch out for the different Standard MIDI File formats, if you have a choice use Type / Format 1 or 2. With Type / Format 0, all events are saved to track 1, which sounds like the problem here.
