Continual set on mpc 1 k, possible?

Hi All,

I was wandering if some wise person on this forum would advise me on the following -

I'm wanting to play live sets in an electronic style with no pauses/stops/gaps between tracks that will run continually for an hour and a half to two hours. My question is, does the 1k have the ability to load new songs and programs whilst playing the previous song uninterrupted?

no it doesn't - you can't load samples while something's playing...

but i reckon if you're creative about it you could play for a pretty long time...
especially if you've got some outboard gear as well.

i'm trying to work out a non-stop set at the moment... only like 30-45 mins
though!

really depends on the size of the samples you want to use... i'm basically just
using drumsounds and one shots, so they're not very big. with the RAM upgrade
you can load up quite a few kits, so you could keep bangin away for a pretty
long time!

So essentially you intend on loading 4X16 pads with sounds and pushing buttons for half an hour or so?

Undoubtedly if you had some extra equipment, creating small breaks between songs or programs would be possible.

Just how long does it take to load a song/program?

you can have up to 99 programs (i think) loaded up before you start, so you could have up to 6336 samples loaded up before you start your set.

So to go all mathematical for a moment.

two hour set = 24 x 5 minute songs.

Each song uses 64 samples

Total samples --> 64*24= 1536

Total mono sample time of MPC = 23 minutes 28 seconds = 1408 seconds

so to fit onto your machine each sample must be -->

1408/1536 = 0.916 seconds long.

considering the fact that most of your songs won't have 64 samples, and you'll probably use the same drum samples for at least some of the songs, i reckon you've got ample space to load up your whole set before you kick off.

@ linday - yeah i'll be using the sequencer so it won't be live the whole time.
most of it hopefully though.

id say get two mpcs and youll be set, this way you can be loading up on one while the other plays the loops or whatever...
