I just bought my very first MPC, which is MPC1000. However, I can't seem to get it working when I follow the manual's instructions. Let me start from the beginning and with all the important details:

- I opened the package and installed the 128MB RAM. The memory slided easily inside the slot and clicked in without using almost no force at all.
- I carefully inserted the memory card into the slot which contains the factory sounds.
- I inserted power cord and plugged it on the wall.
- I inserted headphones and turned the machine on.

I got a welcome notice which said that I have 128MB of memory installed. The manual said that there should be a demo song loaded in the memory which should play when I press the Play Start button. Nothing happened.

I tried loading some samples from the memory card. The screen showed that there were files on the card they seemed to load, but I couldn't get any sound from the pads, nor did I get any sound when I tried pressing the Play Start / Play buttons. The sequencer seemed to be playing something, but I heard no sound at all.

Next I tried sampling. I got a VERY low level sound from the inputs when I turned the Rec Gain knob to full.

At this point I decided to test if the problem was the 128MB memory chip I installed. I removed it and went back to sampling section. Now I could hear the input sound very loud and clear. I sampled it and I could audition the sample right after recording it. However, I didn't get any sound when I assigned the sound to a pad and tried hitting it.

If I go to the Trim menu, I can hear the sound when I hit any pad, but that's the only place where I seem to be able to get any sound played with the pads.

Do I have a broken MPC or is there just something funny going on?

I did a factory reset and now it seems to work just fine. No worries anymore.
