Critical Situation! (lost nearly everything)

Here is the situation...
whenever i save a song, i "save all progs and samps" and create a new folder, then i save all sequences and songs to that folder. If i re-worked a pre-existing song, down the road i will delete the older folder. (for example... the song tited "krunch" will have "krunch 1" then i rework it, and resave it as "krunch 2"... then downthe road i will delete "krunch 1" to free up memory) But this is what just happened---
I recently deleted an older "folder", and oddly enough i also had a "project folder" under the same name. I deleted the regular folder, not the project folder... And what happened is i lost nearly 80 percent of everything in my memory card. Even completely unrelated song folders! Older items remained, but everything i created in the past months was lost!
To make matters stranger, my 1 gig memory card still shows very minimal storage capacity remaining, yet none of my folders/files are there. Are they somehow retrievable?
Any assistance greatly appreciated.

back up your stuff. move your shit to the computer, burn it to a disc.

i mean thats if you care about your music at all.

i know a lot of people got mad shit on they're hd and dont have anything backed up

just like there are programs such as 'norton disk doctor' that will repair & recover deleted files from a hard drive, there are similar programs that will repair & recover files from a flash card. if you don't have one already you will have to get a flash card reader for your computer (usually it's just like a usb cable at one end and a slot for the card at the other) and then plug the card in so your computer can access it & then run the repair program.

the most important things is STOP USING THE CARD IMMEDIATELY! take it out of the mpc & don't touch it again until you have a repair program set ready to go & then follow the instructions that the progam gives you. if you use the card AT ALL you risk further damage & possibly overwriting the deleted files & then they are gone forever.

sorry i can't help you with any specific program recommendation since i've never used anything like that on a flash card but google around a bit and i'm sure you'll find something.

if your CF is showing not a lot of memory free, that means the index data is still in the directory. probably in the trash/recycle bin. if you put your cf in a computer, open the trash, i bet your stuff will be there....hope....


anyways, i might suggest spending 10 bucks on another CF card, and when it fills up, just buy another one.....

I'm not sure what the point is in doing that. Just do frequent backups.

Im still out of luck with trying to recover an "index file" Does anyone know what the extension may be? Does one even exist?

Im pretty certain that my material is still on my flash card, because it still shows only 9 megs avail, out of a 1 gig card. And nothing is showing up on my load menu.

When i hook it up to the mac via usb, still nothing poppin up.

Im considering shelling out 100 bucks for data recovery programs, can anybody recommend one? Anyone used it for flash card investigation?

Is there a specific file in akai os that is utilized for the creation of folders? (in the folders, i would have my samps, progs, and seq files) Once again, not stored as projects, but as "save all progs and samps" folders.

I would say start over again, accpet your losses and be smart about backing up your ish. I have an external HD for this reason. I back up about every three weeks. Give or take this time to do it but its usually is about every three weeks.

By no means think that, because you back up to an external hard drive, your work is safe. My sister just learnt to her cost that external hds break when they hit the floor, and you can't always get the data back. She lost all her work.

There's a program called GetDataBack that I've used in the past several times on hard drives and it's worked very well

They have versions for NTFS as well as FAT file systems

for the MPC's CF card you would need the FAT version... worth a shot

also, it's been said already, but don't write anything to the card anymore. any further writing after the deletion will decrease your chances of recovering your files
