mute a pad using the same pad?

I just picked up an MPC1000. I have been using a Roland SP-808 for years. With the MPC you can choose One Shot or Note On options for the pads. But, is there a way to start a sample hitting a pad and stop the sample by hitting the same pad?

but, that just restarts the sample again. I want to start the sample and then have the option of turning it off.

This seems like the most basic function of any sampler, but I can't figure it out. With the SP-808 I use a midi foot controller to send a note to the sampler. It starts a loop and then I hit the note again to turn it off. Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems that the only way to do this with the MPC1000 is to continually hold the note down and then let off the note to stop the sample.

I don't believe that can be done, the note on is your best bet as the sample will play as long as you hold the pad. One other suggestion is to go to trim page and extract just the part of the sample you want to play and program it to another pad. Hope this is helpful.

you can set another pad to mute it using mute groups

if you want to mute it with the same pad, you'd probably have to do something tricky like setting the sample to trigger only at a certain velocity range like for instance a strong touch will trigger the sample and a very soft touch will trigger no sample

you can set up velocity layers and specify ranges for your layers of samples. I'm not positive this would work, and even if it did it would probably be finicky.

just use a separate pad to mute it or get JJ OS and you can record track mutes

can you use a midi note to trigger sequences? I can't seem to figure this out.
