alright after spending all day practically on this issue i can find no other situation like it on the web and this will be my first post the the fabled MPC forums. i've been using my mpc since march and it's a nice durable piece of kit. never been mean to the box and have had no problems so far until today.
i've had my mpc sitting on top of my rack mount mixer and i fear the summer heat and the heat from the mixer have thoroughly cooked it. but then again, it worked pretty well when it was 100 degrees inside my house with no issues whatsover..
even still, that session could have still fried it somewhat and the record button is seemingly stuck, the symptoms:
when i boot up from a cf card that doesn't have autoload or when there is no card in the drive, the 'program 1' kit is selected (internal kits are selected without the card), all the after keys are highlighted the full level and the record button is highlighted. when i boot with autoload the program1 kit doesn't load and none of the buttons are highlighted except the f'n record button. with the record button highlighted i cannot access the mode button to load or do anything anything. apparently the OS thinks i'm pressing the record button. but i'm not. the over dub function works but does not highlight. all sounds sound good, all functions proper except for inability to access the mode button while the rec button is selected by the OS.
what i think is wrong: the heat has set the internal memory to have a default program in it already on boot up causing the buttons to 'stick'. i did put my 606 on top of the unit for a bit and may have hit the rec. button a few times but not hard and that wouldn't explain why the after keys light up. i don't think it's a hardware issue. OR, if i'm totally screwed, the circuit soldering has melted and has caused a short in the system (not sure if this is possible).
here's what i have done to try to fix the problem:
pressing stop.. no
pressing window when i boot up.. seems to solve all the buttons from lighting up but can't make the prog do anything other than say boot block etc. and the rec button is still highlighted
i have loaded the free JJ os software on to a free cf card via a card reader and plugged mounted the card in the drive while booting up the program. the rec button is still highlighted and you would think that the record button would automatically boot the new os and wipe the old errors... no.
i have pressed a ton of buttons in combination with the buttons that are blocked. so far only the 16 level key can make the full level key go out.
i have pressed the rec button itself and it doesn't seem to be loose. whn i press it all the other buttons light up around it as normal.
erasing the prgram 1 kit and all the sequences when there is no card in the memory. no luck.
pressing erase while booting up. NO.
everything works just that the record button is stuck even record works just fine but since the unit is in record mode the mode buttons do not work rendering the machine useless. it seems like all i would need to do is press reset to get the original factory defaults. but it won't go. everything is still stuck in a highlighted position.
i want to know, am i screwed or is there a way to unscrew myself? and how hot is hot for an MPC?
