Need Help with Recording...

I am new to the forums and fairly new to the MPC. I purchased the MPC 1000 Tutorial and it is a great way to get accustomed to the machine. Anyhow, I have a question about connecting my keyboard to the 1000.

I have a entry level keyboard (Yamaha YPT-310) and I am able to connect it to my MPC via Midi. I can play sounds from my keyboard on my MPC or on the keyboard itself. I can also record the sounds I play but I have no idea where it is recording too, because is not on the MPC. I mean, if I lay down a melody and record it to a sequence and then hit play...of course it plays, but if I turn off my keyboard I noticed it does not play...I assume because it does not record directly to the MPC.

Is it possible to record the sounds I play directly into my MPC? I am making drum kits etc, etc...but now I need to create my melodies and record what I make over my drums. Do I need to upgrade my Keyboard in order to be able to record? Maybe it is a matter of the settings on the MPC?? Am I limited to just sampling to get my melodies?? I am not sure if this makes any sense...but any help from the Vets would be greatly appreciated.

Go to the [record] page and highlight the [drum] and turn the jog wheel to [thru]... that should do it.

Do you understand what MIDI is???

cyan remember about the AKAI OS, but w/JJOS you can plug your keyboard's MIDI input to the mpc's MIDI output, and your keyboard's analog or digital output into the mpc and record it as an audio track...
