there's a lot of choice out there... you need to investigate more:

try www.sospubs.co.uk for articles

personally i use logic 5.1 (remember it's discontinued on PC though), soundforge, of course the MPC1000 program creator

others would swear by ACID, Fruity Loops, Reason, Sonar, ProTools, etc....

there are 1000s of setup. will you add more hardware or software. what type of laptop, how much ram, how many usb ports (some software has dongles), does it have firewire etc.

please list the specs of your laptop and that will be a starting point.

i think a sequencing package (cubase, pro tool etc), midi interface (for hardware), soundcard (usb or firewire, i heard that firewire is better than usb), i would start out with propellerhead reason (the factory sounds are sh*t, i would purchase 3rd party refills), a beat slicer (recycle, intakt which is a vsti, there are allot).

i would not start out with alot of stuff because of the learning curve but get a sequencer, soundcard (soundcard on laptop s*cks), beat slicer and reason. these additon to your laptop and mpc1000 will keep you busy for about a 1 to 18 months. then at that point i would look into my next purchase hardware or software.

keep in mind that it is going to take a minute or 2 to tweak you laptop to perform at its best. i do not know if you have mastered you mpc1000. i think about 18 months will be enough time to really understand the power of your hardware (laptop, mpc100) and the software (sequencer, reason, beatslicer) but once you have your system up and running your will be very happy.
