Direct Outs

I tried using the directs out today and my drum samples sound different. They sound like the drums are in the background and the room ambience is in the front with a nasty metalic sound. I am not using any fx on the 1k. I have them all panned correctly. When I assign them back to stereo (st) They sound fine. Any Ideas?

Are your samples in mono or stereo?
Assigning a stereo sample to a single output forces it to either collapse both channels to a mono signal, which can cause phase issues and will for sure seriously impart on the room orientation in the sample, or send only one of the channels to the output, once again robbing the sample of it´s orientation.
I´m not sure whether the 1000 merge or split the channels of a stereo sample when assigned to a single out, but either way it´ll change the charachter of the sound. I guess it merges and the metallic tone you experience is caused by phase problems in the original recording.

If your samples are mono and you have this problem I´d say check the input channels of your mixer.

i was always under the impression that a stereo sample sent through a mono output would just play the L field of the stereo sample. correct me if i am wrong....

Yes my samples are in stereo. So I routed the stereo snare to to the stereo outs and it sounds normal again. I tried routing it to one output and it sounded bad again. Thanks for your help that was it.

That´s probably very right, I´ve never looked into that. But as stated above either way it´ll change the perception of the sample, from a very subtle to a radical shift in character. Especially older records can have a pretty uneven L/R distribution of some instruments.

sounds like you got some nasty phase issues os those samples...
