are you thinking of the actual data encoder or the wheel it self? cause nym has an aluminum wheel if i remember correctly. but i cant imagine why an alternative encoder couldnt be applied. the encoder itself is a pretty universal part. its just the size and pin location that makes the difference. but i have thought about ordering a 2kxl encoder just to see if i could retro it in.

i actually fixed the problem and found a way to avoid problems in the future...

thats 4 layers of the foam tape topped with felt padding. now the data wheel is supported evenly on all sides. this way theres no chance of the encoder wearing out because of uneven pressure. it feels MUCH more solid too.

Nada yet, I'm waiting til next week when I gotta crack open the MP again... I'm hyped though, between this trick and the silicone pads it's gonna be a solid little 1000.

i think this is a great idea.

question: do you feel like it's at all harder/less smooth to spin the wheel?
i did something similar but i used a less pliant material (your foam tape is a good idea i think, allows for the side to side wobble) and it made it more difficult to use. in the end i'm just back to the original setup.

yeah the foam tape allows a little give. it feels supple yet firm. the wheel fits tight on the spindle so you have to adjust it upwards somewhat so it doesnt rub on the felt too hard. i would say that the motion is a little stiffer than stock but not much. and the wobble is minimized. it doesnt feel like its gonna break off or wear out fast.
