prob2: am i saving things wrong?

okay sorry to start a new thread....but this is a different issue that for seem reason has only started effecting me now, althou mayb i hav noticed it before. just to quickly add, so far i've taken my 256 ram out, formatted the mem card (backing up all my tunes onto my pc, and then putting on the reformatted mem card) and also hav just re-installed os 1.07. so far, no issues....i did put the ram bak in, and when switched on the mpc did a ram test, and got 50% returning with the response that the ram was bad, so mayb it was messed all along, which pee's me off a lil as it was bought brand new.....anyway, heres the current burning issue, the only real bug that hasnt seemed to go away as of yet, and it could b a real simple stupid mistake im doing, so please see if u can help, i really will appreciate it.

okay when i make a tune i always clear the memory on the mpc (using an autoload folder with nothing in it) and then load the pgms i want, then add xtra samples from watever, and then i construct a beat. when i sav a new beat i create a new folder each time in the root menu and save all files, pgms, seqs and songs ive used to make that tune in to that folder using the 'save entire memory' function. nothing wrong there, nice and organised, taken from tips off this board. okay the problem is when i save a beat that ive continued work on. so say i open up 'new folder' where my new tune was made yesterday, and add all i want to it, when i go to save, i would save it in the same 'new folder' that i would have created when i started the beat, and i select 'save entire memory' again, keep the same project name (e.g 'project01') and select 'yes' on the 'replace same files' option. is this wrong?

as of lately it seems to be a bit random if it will save the updated seqs and pgms and anything i would hav done after originally creating the folder for my song. at the moment my only way round it is to keep creating new folders for the updated song, which works as new tunes going into new folders seems to save fine....its when updating/adding to tunes that things dont seem to save properly. any ideas here? (apologies for doing such long posts, but when u spend 400 pounds of money u've been working daily 10 shifts for in a depressing call centre, it is just a tad bit frustrating when u find it doesnt work)

theres a clear option in the loading page. it comes up when u load a new file.

Rob, saving ENTIRE MEMORY files over older versions in the same folder should work as you described. I do it myself.
It should replace all files with the same name in that folder. Are you sure it's not updating the files this way?
Also take your time analysing your MPC, you've put your RAM back in but are you sure this is not part of the problem?
Why not just leave it out for at least a week and in he meantime solve the saving issue.
Once you got that and didn't hear those strange noises put the RAM back in, if the problems start again you may assume it's the RAM causing it.

I actually have exactly the same problem that he describes. I also often create a new folder to make sure it saves properly. The MPC is not very good at overwriting files I dont think.

no the ram is out...sorry if that wasnt clear. seriously tho, dunno wat to say, in my case the mpc seems to be very bad at overwriting files, sometimes ill do it five times or so just to be sure...it only works for sure when i create a new folder....im a bit scared of buying new ram just in case the mpc is itself **** and i wasted money on it. im not sure whether to buy the kingston ram again, despite my problems as everyone else has had no probs with it (im guessing i physically damaged it myself, which is pos, im a bit heavy handed). not a huge prob using just 16 megs as i can adapt ok, altho some of my older beats are too big. at the end of the day im gonna make beats on this thing if its broke or not, u gotta do wat u hav to do!!!! whilst i love my mpc (nothing ive used sounds like as chunky, samples just sound so much better on the mpc over my pc, shows wat the difference between a cheapo pc setup setup and a piece of kit dedicated to doing wat u want it to do), but unlike a pc, if its not a software prob or obvious hardware prob, its damn hard to work out what is broke....i mean it could be ram, but as the ram was not always messing up, its really hard to tell, i mean wats stopping it being a damaged cpu or something. ah well, i guess ill spank 30 quid on more ram, just hope it solves all probs...if someone can answer my mpc doesnt sav properly then i promise ill stop writing such long posts and annoying ppl with my problems

did you format the CF card inside your MPC or with a card reader on your PC?
Formatting in the MPC is the most reliable.

i formatted it in the mpc, dont yet hav a card reader for the pc.....

yeah, i have this same problem. its a ****. it's so frustrateing to work on a beat for a few hours save it and then go back to find out it didnt save the changes youve made.

its random as well.....i womder wat fault causes it, the mem card or the mpc? i might hav purchase some more memory and see wat happens then. i mean i originally bought the cheapest 512meg cd i could find, which could be part of the prob, i dunno. all tho i wouldnt hav thought it would make a difference, as the problem is overwriting files onto the card, not loading from the card

wondering if anyone has ideas wat this prob is. its really peeing me off. i haav to create a new folder ever time i save, altho, if its the first time switching the mpc on after a few hours, it will overwrite files fine...luckily iv e just bought a card reader to check if the mpc is saving things correctly in a nice and quick way. and its not. only saves properly when a new folder is created. any ideas? is it my mem card (its a viking 512 meg card)? or this is a bug, if it is a bug, then mayb can i ask if theres any word if akai know about this prob and hav rectified it with the new os, its driving me mad, sorry to bring it up again.

i have had the issue going on for awhile too. I always thought it had to do with saving over an existing file, so i always save things in all ways and stoppped **** with saving entire mem. I rarely move that mpc, only for gigs if it is needed.

isnt saving "entire memory" the only way to save info in the step edit like velocity modifications, or am i missing something. wat save methods do u do mate, it'll be a real use.

No, if you choose 'ALL SEQUENCES AND SONGS" in save mode it will save those edits.
Saving "ALL PROGRAMS & SAMPLES" does exactly what it says.
"SAVE ENTIRE MEMORY" saves sequences, songs, programs, samples AND all settings in your MPC including effects and stuff.

Read chapter 15: LOAD/SAVE if you're confused with the different options.

Good question. i've just recently started having a saving problem. I use to be able to go to "Save Entire Memory", and it would save everything. Now I go to "Save all programs, and samples", then "Save all sequences, and songs". Now If I use midi at all. I just end up sampling it into my mpc, just make sure I have the actual sound there. Because i would be workin on be w/ my emu mk-6 midi'd up to my mpc, and then turn off my mpc, and then later want to want to track it out, and none of the midi setting were saved. I'm going to try to re-format my cf card, and re-install the os, and see what happens.
