Record Collections

Its quite standard for someone with a MPC 1000 to have a lilttle record collection for sampling out of. What type of records due yall get to sample. Like if you were on ebay or a record shop buying records what, what do you look for to get samples like for bass samples or piano samples, or whatever. What do you look for

i like to sample old arabian and indian (ok lets say all kind of ethnic) vinyls, they have nice percussion sounds.

My mum's South Korean, so she has all sorts of crazy-ass records in her collection that I keep having to steal and sample. Some really nice loops of flutes and strings, and most of it is instrumental stuff, so it's really easy to sample and loop.

Other than that - I try to stay away from sampling traditional sources i.e. much of Hip Hop samples old disco/funk/soul etc. I quite like my progressive rock, and although it's been sampled by alot of good producers, the breaks aren't as widely recognised as say, Bob James or Funk Inc.

If I'm out DITC, I'm looking for something nice and obscure on a good piece of plastic. As close to mint as possible. Nothing worse than hearing a good sample which sounds like cack cos the wax is FUBAR!

You ain't gonna find good records easy. You gotta put time in to find the goodness amongst the refuse. It's always good to search out the original samples to some of your favourite producer's work and work out how they've sampled, and what sections of records they've sampled/looped etc. It's a good way to figure out what sort of thing you should be looking for when you're out digging.

my advice is sample small from a variety of sources. this way you can sample the poorest records you can imagine.

it's funny - i'm the most godless man i know and i sample a lot of christian records because they always have their instruments soloed out and their drums panned far to the left (i guess jesus likes it that way?)

i also sample them because it's what i have - for 50 bucks i got about 100 albums at a goodwill auction.

one time i took a guitar sample of lonnie parsons, chopped it, and turned it into an arabic kind of thing

I like 1970's or 60's for drums.

Usually rock records have good breaks, and jazz trio records usually have some good drums too.

I also like using avant-garde classical, not Bach or Beethoven unless its solo or duet. The "out" stuff has more solo moments I find, I like sampling one instrument at a time if possible.

i got about 5 crates of my records 3 of em are for personal use to listen to mostley and maybe sample, but they have so much shit to sample that i aint going to try to put my spin on it because it good as it is, and i got 2 that are nothing but sample type records.

I got about 20 crates total now, the other are in storage, but i dont buy records to sample, thats not my style, i buy records for good music, jsut like cats buy music nowadays.

i got dope records that are samplble, by that i mean every song you could make a beat, but i wont do that because the song is already dope.

i have like a whole collection of his records. I found it in my garage. Never even looked at it coz I thought it would be crap...

I have the usuall selection of jazz, soul, and funk. But my fav records to find are anything without english writing i will buy it. I live in VA so its a lotta country records in the suburan thrift store and a lotta soul and jazz in the inner cities. When I was stationed in Cali lotta spansih records but I was sleeping . So always remember to take advanatge when your out of town. I'm getting ready to do a med cruse.

I have about 12 crates, 10 of which full of vinyl that I enjoy listening to. The other 2 are random records to sample off of...
